PS3 price drop
Anyone else notice that the PS3 is $100 cheaper now? BB and Walmart now have it for $499 instead of $599 for the 60GB model. Those are the only two places I've checked sofar. Only $100 more to go before I grab me one.

Yea, they dropped it during an E3 announcement IIRC. It will also include 80gb instead of 60gb, again IIRC.
Good news for potential buyers.
Probably be waiting another year at least, as i'm sure this price drop will make Sony take an even more substantial loss on each system

I doubt their losses are anywhere near what they were during the initial release. The price of Blu-Ray alone as come down significantly since PS3's release and I'm sure the manufacturing process for the CPU/GPU is also yielding a lot better than before. Everything else is just plastic and copper wires.

my guess is they'll drop the price but remove the emotion engine - thereby removing PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility

For only a while.
It never drops in Japan. Only a few would go out and bought'em.
PS3 is now back up on the price again. If only the dead can speak, then we will know what's happening to us all next...

and ya know what the fun thing is?? They will NOT drop the prices in europe.
1st it was 599 USD in the US and 599 euros in europe.
Now it's 499 USD and still 599euros, wanna know what they did to "make up for it"?? they added a choice of 1 game and something else, here's info:
that means from 1st of august, it'll be sold with 2 sixaxis controllers and 2 games, with the choice of abovementioned.
So I guess that kind of makes up for this??2 x Opteron 4280 2.8Ghz, Asus KCMA-D8, 32GB DDR3 1600, Asus 6950 DCII 1GB 2 x M4 64GB SATA600, Caviar Black 640GB, Seagate 1TB, 27"syncmaster

Well suposedly the price drop will not last long, only until current 60GB models are exhausted. Rumor has it that Sony has ceased production of the 60GB model and are poised to release the 80GB version which is suppose to include MotorStorm as well as inflate the price back up to $599.

if this is the case, the ps3 will be like the x360 such that it MIGHT be able to run some games off the old systems, which really sucks. is there any difference in the 80gig and 60gig that warrants $100 other than more space and a game/movie? you can go out and buy a new HDD and put it in there easily.

one thing though, you know they will bounce back... it sounds like PS2 days... this just costs alot more.

Not really. PS3 is not quite like ps2 was, in many ways. Sony went well overboard this time tech wise, was the last to come out, and is priced highest. Games are scarce, and it seems like it is going to be that way for a while.
By the time they bounce back, other competitors will already be miles ahead, as they actually already are. Sony needs something drastic to get sales up, whether that be a huge game, or a price cut..Something needs to be done.Main PC: AMD FX-8350 / 16gb DDR3 1600 / AMD 7970GE 1200mhz Core & 1600mhz Mem / Win7 Pro 64bit

And Ramon was right....

read the rest at the above linkLast week various retailers reported, and Sony later confirmed, that the 60 GB PS3 would be cut from $599 to $499. Sony also announced that a new version of the PS3, the 80 GB PS3, would be introduced at the old $599 price point. Turns out there was more behind the decision than was first announced, as Sony exec Kaz Hirai explained in an interview that the 60 GB will be phased out, leaving the 80 GB PS3 was the lone model of the console on the market.

so basically this will be the price for the 80GB by christmas time, what the 60GB is going for.... not much of a drop in the end

I watched E3 on G4, and they announced it there. I'm waiting for a replacement PS3 from Sony. It wouldn't quite turn on anymore. Just a blinking red light...nevertheless, they sent me a shipping box and a prepaid label and said that it will take 3-5 days from them receiving it to get my new PS3 back...this includes shipping they said. We shall see...they should have received it today since it was Next Day Air. I'm still waiting for Metal Gear Solid 4, which is supposed to be the last one.
