can't realy say today was is was the best. everyone will think different.. but a few I played.. that I think are very good Wolfenstein - rememebr when it came out.. at the time I coudln't play it as I had a EGA.. and it required a VGA.. but soon enough I was playing it.. and Spear of Destiny Doom - At its time it was the best looking game I had played.. next to Wing Comander 3.. and also at the time it did have times it scared the crap out of me. Quake - for the matter.. Quake 2 But I felt the first quake.. even though it was very drab.. was a better game then Quake 2.. Half-Life - yes so far these are very basic choices everyone woudl choose.. To me half life was a turning point for fps game..
I coudl go on naming No one lives forever for its wit.. or Shogo for its interesting approach to the fps market.. also the first use of the Lithtec engine I can think of.. and of course Deus Ex a game that pulled u into it.. but I also felt it pulled from games like System Shock. I could go down about 20 or 30 more FPS I've played.. andwhat I liked and didn't.. but it would be basic stuff.. =)
right now.. u want to know what my fav FPS game out right now is.. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault.. and if I couldn't choose that.. I think the HL mod Day of Defeat 2 takes a good mention.
If u have a question about what ppl liked as for controls.. and so forth.. ask..=) so ppl will knwo what u r looking for =)

All time favorite FPS is Doom II with the ZDoomGL rendering engine, as 3D Doom under OpenGL rulez! Currently only play Unreal Tournament, awaiting UT 2003. I only use Q3A for testing, as the gaming environment just does not feel as smooth as UT.

I really like MOHAA -
before that UT and Q2.
Q1 was good - but it was Doom that got me hooked on PC's ...... I remember going into a circuit city - and they had doom on the display PC's - and I was like - I gotta have that - that began this often expensive hobby....
