NFS HS in XP
From this thread Need For Speed: High Stakes doesn't work for 2000, and since XP is just 2000 with everything better does NFS:HS work in XP? Is there a patch for NFS:HS to fix it from EA?

Check this out http://www.ntcompatible.com/comp.php?cat=games&idx=n about 3 quaters of the way down the page there is this for winXP
And also this for win2kNeed for Speed 4: High Stakes (Electronic Arts) Yes WinXP 04/02
Received the follow messages:
1) Installs and plays fine. Still does not play Glide, but that is the only problem. Running on Beta 2 2462a
2) Install it as usual. However don't select play from the autoplay menu (and perhaps hold down shift so it wont autoplay). Then just select the high stakes entry in the start menu (can't remember if you need compatability mode on).
It looks like it also likes to be installed from the first CD/DVD drive. If you install it from your second cd drive it will ask you to insert the disk in the first cd drive. However if you insert the disk it then crashes becuase it can't find files on the other cd drive.
* So install it from the first cd drive.
* Run it from the start menu and don't autoplay
* You don't need compatability mode but try it if it doesn't run reliably.
* And don't forget to run the 3d setup first and ignore that fact your card is "un-supported" becuase only cards that date a TNT2 are officially supported. You might wanna try them out. BTW i didn't read all of the instructions so i dunno what exactly ya gotta do. But lemme know how it goes, i think i've still got NFS:HS somewhere around here, might try it out myself.Need for Speed 4: High Stakes (Electronic Arts) Yes W2000 02/02
Received the follow messages:
1) Download patch
2) 1) Download and install that update 2) Create a shortcut to the setup executable from the cd on your desktop. 3) Right click on the shortcut and change properties to run in compatibility mode. 4) After install is complete run game normally. This will not work if you are installing from a burned copy of the game. It has to be the actual retail CD.
http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...-US/appupd.exe
3) Make sure you have the latest game compatibility update... go to google to search for it, download it from the Microsoft site result.
Make a shortcut to the setup.exe on the NFSHS cd and go into properties and click on the Compatibility tab. Have it run under Windows 98 compatibility layer. Run setup up and it should install fine. After installation is finished it may not detect your 3d card if you have a newer one. In this case the installation will freeze after the file copy is done. To unfreeze it go to task manager and look in the processes. Find something called 3data. End that process and your installation should give you and error and/or a confirmation (possibly after the error if you get the error) that installation is complete. If your card works I assume it would detect it normally.
Install the latest patch for NFSHS (4.5) as I linked to in the drivers/patch box. Now go into the registery to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts"
Now edit the thrash driver in the need for speed high stakes folder and put D3D in as its value if your 3d card was not detected. In the sub folder 1.0 go to the value srcdrive and make sure it is your first cd rom drive value. Mine is D:\. Now you should be set up to go. This should work under the other NT based OS's I would assume...

Hey poopeyhed2,
I was able to get HS running fine until my CD went up in smoke. Ran fine with the documented fix.

It runs fine for me in XP. I think I just ran the compatibility wizard. Also be sure to pick up the d3d patch. It sped the games preformance up by at least 30% for me.

Thanks!
Thanks for all your input, from Jayman's response, I have fixed it, I installed it on my DVD-Rom drive which is the slave. And I installed it through my burner, and now it works. Thanks everyone!

Ok, now that I installed the update because I don't remember what I did and NFS wouldn't work so then I installed the update. Now, after the update, my settings won't save, any suggestions?
