I have an odd, variable problem with my PS2 disc tray. It plays silver-bottomed PS2 discs fine, but will not play blue-bottomed discs and makes a horrible grinding noise. The same noise, only not so bad, occurs with PS1 games. It happened before I took my PS2 apart, and although I fixed a couple of other issues with it, it is still happening, though no worse than before.
My model number is SCPH-5003, and it's a silver console. It's about 5-6 years old now. Any ideas that don't involve replacing the console, and that I can do myself?
Regards,
Luke |

Well Im guessing silver disks are DVD-ROM where as the blue is CD-ROM (If you say it does the same thing to PS! games, all of which are CD-ROM). It sounds like your lens has been jogged or neededs replacing. I can only guess however as I have never had a PS2.

Luke | Since you took yours apart, the only option is to find a place to repair it that isnt "authorized" due to your voiding the warranty already. Since the price on the PS2 is only 100 bucks, just go buy a new one! |

Well, the warranty expired at least 4 years ago surely. We certainly have no receipt for the PS2. And I don't think it's the lens - I think it's the actual tray that is causing the problem, as it makes the noise when spinning the disc, although the lens may have been jogged as well. Having said that, that doesn't explain why DVD-type games would work, and CD-type don't. Also, I put in a music CD, and had the same issue as with the blue disc. What is the difference on the coating of the two types?
And I also don't have £40-50 spare at present either. |

The difference would be that there are two seperate lasers required, one for CD-ROM and another for DVD-ROM. If memory serves, the CD-ROM based laser is several times larger of a laser because of the size of area it needs to read for the equivalent "packet" size. If your only able to read DVD's then your CD laser is dead. Welcome to why i stopped gaming on my PS2 nigh on a decade ago. Time to start mowing lawns or walking dogs for some extra scratch cause a replacement laser is going to cost you about as much as a new unit. |

Damnit, that was the last thing I wanted to hear. I do have a friend with two PS2s, but both of those have their issues as well, though I do believe they will play these games. I will now of course have to investigate. |

See what you can get pawning that one off to someone else and do some odd jobs for some extra scratch to buy yourself a new one. |

Please tell me where I can get this from, for Amazon are asking for £40 at least, and I would prefer another silver (goes better with my PC and TV), though I would settle for black (matches digibox). |
