Xbox 360 crashing at start-up, L4D2 and possibly update-related
Hello, I've been having problems with my 360 and I was wondering if anyone could give me a hand. Sorry if this isn't the best place to post this, but I thought it seemed like the best place...
I recently put the game Left 4 Dead 2 into the console and it required an update, so I allowed the console to do so. However, when I thought the update was finished (it came up with the logo and boot-up noise etc.) I removed the disc, which I think may have disrupted the update.
I recall coming to the dashboard and finding the 3D avatars of my profiles blacked out. After continuing on and selecting my own profile, then returning the disc and trying to play, the system crashed.
Every time I've booted up the system since then has had many different results. With the Left 4 Dead 2 disc in, the console gets to the logo and the "XBOX 360" text underneath it, then freezes. Without the disc, it only gets to the logo and the text does not appear and it freezes. I have also tried removing the hard drive with both combinations; when the hard drive is out and there is no disc, it comes to a "Failed to Update" error screen (which leads me to believe it's trying to update, but is unable to). When the hard drive is out and the disc IS in the drive, I get the same results as when the hard drive is inserted.
If anyone can give me some advice, please let me know.

You screwed up the update. I am not sure what made you decide to take the disc out but the update was for the game and not your system. Best bet is to do a system wipe, clear all updates and start from scratch. You will lose ALL updates on your system so be prepared for a long series of updates to get your system back to its current version. Every game you had updated will need to be updated again as well. Next time ... leave the disc in.

How do I clear the updates when I can't get to the Dashboard?
I'm assuming this will probably affect other saved data on the system and hard drive as well.

I've searched already, but I've only found two ways of doing it. The first requires access to the dashboard, and the second (involving holding the white sync button while powering on the console) does not work, with or without the HDD in place.

Can someone tell me, from the sounds of things, if moving the Hard drive to another 360 and attempting to at least remove the failed update data from that would be safe? Like doing so would not potentially risk doing the same thing to another 360?
If anyone else has any suggestions on what to do, please let me know. I'll try calling Xbox tech support again, even if it's a chore trying to navigate my way through their automated messages just to talk to a real person...

Moving to a different xbox MAY do it ... but also may not clear it from yours. Your best bet is to try calling support or checking the online faqs on the live site.
