    problems with 16:10 aspect ratio

    Hi all!
    I'm using a 16:10 (1440x900) LCD display for gaming.
Some games like HL2 handle it just fine. But some (older ones) can't be set to the correct aspect ratio. (only 16:9 or 4:3)
Is there a way to fix this? I am ok with borders on the side of my screen, but not with stretched images.

    Some exemple problem games:
BF2, GP4, colin Mcrae rally 2005, Rally championship Xtreme, ...

GPU: visiontek ATI radeon 2600 pro

    thanks for any help.

16:10 means problem if you are into gaming. The best thing to do is to buy a 16:9 monitor. Thats the standard.

Ignore this advice, they don't know what their talking about.

Its fine to run games at 16:9 or even 4:3. Some games JUST DO NOT SUPPORT 16:10.

Simple as that, anyone with half a brain would know that rather than suggest buying a 16:9 monitor (the fact that it never occurred to the person above that the OP may not have the money for a new replacement with the "recommended" aspect ratio)

There are quite a few games that do support 16:10, so what would your advice be on those?

    Seriously

Just run the game at 16:9, 1280x720 or something and you should be fine, so there's some black borders on the sides, or top a little and its not full screen. At least its not for Every game, only some.

one of my games supposedly fully supports Widescreen 16:9 and 16:10, but even when enabled and modified in games config file, it still doesn't stretch it properly on screen, and my circular weapon sites and scopes are slightly oval shaped... its annoying, but I get used to it. but the game is dated back from 2004/2005, and though updated and patched every couple years, Thankfully its only THAT game, all other similar games I play work fine with out the distortion effect.

Yes, and that means trouble if you are using a 16:10 monitor.

16:9 is the standard for gaming today which means that games are programmed for 16:9. Obviosly it is better to run todays games with a 16:9 monitor instead of a 16:10.

I think GZ's post proves my point.

Battlefield 2 came out in what? 2005 or so? and supported 16:10.

How exactly does it mean trouble if your running a 16:9 or 4:3 ratio on a 16:10 display?

I have a 16:9 1080p LCD, and am able to run 16:9 or 4:3 fine as long as it fits with in the confines of the max resolution (1920x1080).

like I mentioned, he has a 1440x900 display, just run the games that don't support 16:10 in a 16:9 resolution such as 720p, 1280x720 (fits with in the confines of the displays resolution).

    NO HARM, NO TROUBLE.

I am totally OK with borders. The problem is that the games don't run with borders when set to 16:9, they stretch it out to fill the screen! That's just horrible you know. It looks totally messed up.
Is there a way I can avoid that?
@ ground zero: I'll give that a shot, but BF2 isn't by far the only game with this issue.

check your monitors on screen setup and controls, most have the ability to display by aspect ratio or full screen.

Check your monitor and see what kind of settings it has.

Whats your Monitors brand and model?

Yeah, looked at documentation for your monitor, seems it doesn't have any sort of settings for that, but then again its a basic dell model too, so not much beyond basic settings to do that with.

It's a good monitor, yet basic. Who needs all those basic settings? My image is warm and beautiful.

Well, the aspect ratio setting is handy, like I mentioned, adjusting from full screen image to aspect ratio comes in handy from time to time. For example if I have an older 4:3 ratio resolution, having it set to Full stretches it out, if I select Aspect for display, it maintains the original 4:3 ratio with out stretching it.

If my monitor was a 16:10 and I displayed a 16:9 image, it would maintain the 16:9 setting with bars above and below.

Some games do this too. grand prix 3 places bars where needed to maintain the aspect ratio. GP4 doesn't however :/ GP3 is much better.

I found on the web that earlier versions of CCC had an option for maintaining the aspect ratio.
Which version will work good with my radeon HD 2600 pro?
