new xbox 360 4GB
so after fixing my xbox´s RRoD countless times, it finally didnt get any more repairs so im in the market for a new xbox 360.
I would prefer going for the 4GB one since i dont download any games at all neither films nor music, play from CDs directly
now my question was do they have any problems like the past xbox, overheating issues etc.? should i wait for a 2nd generation or go ahead and buy it?

2nd generation? There's been at least 3 or 4 generations or revisions of the 360 already, latest version is the Xbox 360 Slim style/revision.
as far as I know, ALL 360's have had overheating problems, but to varying degree's.
overall the Xbox 360 like many modern day console systems are POORLY designed when it comes to component cooling and airflow.
If you've actually taken your 360 apart you can see why with the crap heatsink design they used, almost no real airflow into and out of the case, and what not.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

I'm sorry , let me rephrase
What I meant by 2generation was a 2 generetion of the latest "slim" version .. and if the new slim version still had heating issues , should I wait until a new generation of the slim comes out ?
Basically, just want some feedback in the durability of the new slim version
And yes I've seen the inside of the firstxbox 360 since I usually repair my own, and it does have crappy airflow , but I haven't seen the inside of the new slim version

haven't seen the inside of the slim version yet either, though I seem to remember recalling that somewhere along the ways before it came out they introduced some sort of newer better design heatsink, using heatpipes, but I doubt it would do any good do to the the lack of adequate airflow in the casing anyways.
not really sure on the slim models though.
But with the new Nintendo console on the way in the next year or so, a New Sony PSP replacement in a month or two, and rumors of the next generation Xbox surfacing in the next year or 2 or so, has me wonder how many more iterations of the 360 they plan on even making, or if the slim is the last redesign?
They may have a couple revisions of the slim, but nothing really revolutionary I would think.
Myself If I was a 360 user/fan, and had the money, I'd grab a current gen used/pre-owned 360 for cheap, and see if I can still find one of these Lian Li Custom Xbox 360 Cases: Lian Li Industrial Co., Ltd.
and swap the whole system into it if possible. Even though it was ceased in production back in 2008.
but thats if I had the funds to do so.
Though I just picked up a Used Wii for $110 a month or so ago, so enjoying that to some extent right now. Would love a PS3 but even used costs too much, and a 360 wouldn't be bad either, but I abhor their controller design, why they thought they needed to place the analog sticks so damn far apart and awkward like they did is beyond me. the original Xbox Controller design was perfectly fine, but no, they had to mess with it.
(M$ isn't the only one with a F*cked up controller design, though no longer made, the Gamecubes controller layout was pretty stupid as well, with the placement of the Z Trigger and Analog "Camera" stick...
)
Best Console Controller layouts ever made in the past 20-25 years was probably the original Super Nintendo (4 fire buttons, and Left/Right "shoulder" buttons, which has been copied since and only bested once since with the Playstation/Playstation 2's Dual Shoulder buttons on each side), and then the start of the Sony Playstations Dual Shock style Controllers with Dual Analog Sticks placed together as they are currently.
I have a PSP, and am looking VERY much forward to the new PSP Vita.
the new Wii "U" is looking interesting, though I don't know how well that new Controller they have will cost, but I suspect it would be well over $100 with the built in LCD Touchscreen display.
Myself I have 2 360's, one that I intended to replace the Optical drive, but broke the casings tabs to put it back together, and just never got around to it. the 2nd one has a similar problem, but not sure what it is exactly, and have it sitting in the corner.
So I DO have a couple 360's, just not working. So definitely not a "Fan Boy" here (since I own Nintendo, Sony, AND Microsoft Consoles), at least fanboy of any given brand console.
Super Nintendo, Nintendo Gameboy/Gameboy Advance/Gameboy Advance SP/Gameboy Micro, Nintendo 64, Nintendo Game Cube, Nintendo Wii.
Sega Genesis, Sega Dream Cast (2 of them).
Atari 2600, Atari Jaguar (2 of them).
Sony PSP.
Microsoft Xbox 360 (2 dead ones, and used to have a original, but was "stolen" by someone who was modding it for me)
And then, there is my Windows Based Gaming rig that eclipse all of these consoles together LOL. So yet another Microsoft gaming system
Not even mentioning Emulators and a thousand or so ROMS for them on the PC.i7 940//Corsair H60//EVGA X58 SLI LE//6GB Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz//2x EVGA GTX 560 Ti FPB SLI//NZXT Hale82 850W//CM 690 II Advanced//Win7 64//WD 74GB V-raptor, 750GB Black, 1.5TB Green

I have the X-Box 360 S (250 gig standard, the same size as the original Elite line), I purchased it after my first "generation" (model) X-Box had the RRoD. I was interested in knowing if my new box would overheat just as my old box had.
I can confirm what Shyguy is saying with the whole overhaul of parts. Better design and quality components. As if to exaggerate the matter, I leave my 360 on over night occasionally (hey, some games have crappy save points) and to date it hasn't experience the RRoD. I don't doubt it will if I keep up my inane activities the thing will become toast - but just be aware that the new 360 S does take a beating. I never would have left the original box I had on as long.
Ventilation sucks in those older 360s. When that poorly constructed bad boy over heats (older X-Box units have cold solder joints which are lead-free) it allowed for weak spots in the solder and made connections unstable. Microsoft refuses the notion and says that the solder can withstand that heat. The general consensus has been that the particular solder that they used was poor and not to be used under such heat-intensive areas. The new 360 S, presumably from what I've read, corrects this by using different materials.
But that's not the only reason the RRoD happens of course. Something as simple as a faulty power cable can be to blame. Or temporary overheating. Also a big one is the quality/lack of amount of thermopaste they've used (bah, just see Xbox Troubleshooting: Red Ring of Death Fix for an exhaustive report on what it's caused by).
The solder issue is discredited by some and said to be true by others. But my point is that - to my knowledge (and you should research it first) - the latest S 360s have made significant improvements. Will errors still happen? Possibly but then again the RRoD has many causes not just faulty components as you see.
Shy: those cases are sick (and help promote good ventilation too!) But alas I can't justify purchasing one at the moment. LOL like you, Shy, I'm into the SNES/PS/SEGA ROMS. But lately i've been spending more time on the 360 than the stupid PC (given the graphics card problems I've had but hopefully, with your help, have fixed).Last edited by Interrupt; September 13th, 2011 at 12:01 PM.

edit: whoops, never mind, amazon.com messed up on search again, showed it as the Lian Li Xbox case, and when clicked it showed a Lian Li Mid tower PC case.
