Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PC Requirements Announced

Looks like Toms Hardware had a quick article on the Requirements for Skyrim for the PC just released.

Bethesda Reveals PC Requirements for Skyrim

    Release date being 11-11-11/

Looks like I'll be set for Recommended for this one, unlike Oblivion where I had just over minimum to run that.

One tiny little rant about the requirements though...

I'm not a big fan of it needing Steam to activate. I love steam for downloading and buying games, but I Don't think its right to require steam for a brick & mortar store bought game, and then require a one time connection to activate the game.

I went through this crap with Duke Nukem Forever a couple weeks ago, on the box it said one time connection... Load of crap.

EVERY time the game starts it needs to start steam whether your in online or offline Mode.

Its even worse for games that have NO online multiplayer aspects... why do I need to have a 3rd part app or service to play this game?

What would happen if I had no internet? I would not be able to activate the game, nor play it.

personally game developers assume too much these days, that EVERY person in the world has an internet connection of some sort. When they don't.

Welp, guess I'm forced to upgrade again (Much like I had to shortly after Oblivion came out)

    Still running My s939 A64 x2 4200 (2.2ghz), 2gb DDR400. and x1950pro AGP 256mb.

Everything else meets the specs but the x1950pro, however I'm sure a setup like this would hardly make the game enjoyable so in a way I'm glad it can't run it.

I was going to drop 100 bucks and just pickup a 4670 1gb but I'm sure that card mixed with my setup will still not fair well enough. (Unless you feel otherwise, I'm not on a big enough budget to be concerned about graphics currently)

Though I do have a 360 and a 1080p 40" TV, so that may be the route I go instead, though I can never imagine myself playing a TES game on a console

    ___

I agree with you 100% on the use of steam. Must be some deal between them and valve to push software, as I see absolutely zero need for this otherwise.

This game should be a piece of cake to run.... Silky smooth all the way for me.

I think that 4670 will be a good fit for that system Solo. Thought about overclocking the CPU?

my gaming PC hasnt' been turned on in probably a year.. and I doubt I could even play at minimum on that
    I'll get the PS3 version
maybe not as pretty but still just as functional

I think for the consoles at least, the only real draw back for them is the inability to use much of the Modding Communities mods, like with Oblivion and Morrowind.

But for the core game itself, the consoles should be fine as well.

Still waiting on the Lord Of The Rings Based Mod for Oblivion to see how that turns out.

Shy: is the practice of using Steam in that way akin to using some sort of activation protection? I'm just curious because I've noticed a lot of games that require Steam activations (games that I didn't even purchase over Steam to begin with). Hell, I didn't even know some games were Steam games. I don't know what's so wrong with other forms of activation... it's not like it's a real added layer of security, the pirating community cracked Steam activations the day they started using them (unfortunately for paying consumers like myself). If protection was their goal they failed miserably and pissed off a lot of gamers in the process.

I too find it really annoying and wrong on some level. I don't always want to be online to activate a product a product with a campaign mode (often times I'll only play in campaign mode). Edit:LOL, I just realized you had the same complaint. Not only that but I'm not a fan of excess resources being utilized in any fashion. Starting Steam seems like a wasted motion.

Tbc I too, like you Solo, enjoy such open ended RPGs on PC more so than on consoles. The only exception I think - for me - was Fallout 3. I think this was either due to some glitchiness I was experiencing or the fact that I wasn't running such great specs at the time. It was still glitchy as hell on the 360 but I enjoyed it immensely.

Games like DA: Origins on 360? Eh, not so hot. Although it's good for those that can't meet the min. specs on DA. Even in my upgraded rig now I'm having harsh FPS problems. I'm told that this is common in Origins on PC. But I can't bear to play the 360 version. Besides... seeing my rogue chick prance around in a scalemail skirt helps me forget all about the glitches.

As I told Shy recently, I've been playing Dead Island on PC and loving it. With the setup he helped me with the game runs amazing. Something about exploring a massive world with awesome visuals and a keyboard is far better than using the 360s less than optimal visuals at times (though drastically depends on the game).

I haven't run Oblivion on my newer setup yet but have in the past. Frame rate degradation was expected since the game is so damn demanding but I didn't care, it was amazing. With the right tweaks to the bloom effects/etc it was astonishing, I couldn't imagine not being able to tweak all that on the 360 version: I would have totally lost interest with it in seconds. But that may just be... some games just suit me better on PC.

I agree Shy: I really love the modding Oblivion and for me that drawback is also what held me back from really enjoying the console version. *Shrugs* Plus I have all the DLC on PC such as the castle, horse, etc... so cool. Edit: Recently my save game files were corrupted... that's the only thing that stopped me from continuing to enjoy Oblivion. I may play it again soon with some hacks to level up faster, though. The devel console is always a plus for me when it comes to gaming.

As a side note I'm half done with Rage on console and enjoying it immensely (I did this mainly for the visuals as I've heard they run much better on console when all 3 discs are installed, which is what I did). Truly another brilliant game.

I hope Skyrim is as good as Oblivion... it will be hard to fill those shoes.

Due to no PCI/AGP bus lock, the most I've truly gotten stable was a meager 150mhz-200mhz clock, so i'm looking at 2.4ghz the most.

I still may pick up a 4670... but I have a feeling I will be dissapointed in it over my x1950pro. Yea, it will be faster, but is it worth $100 when the 360 version would sadly probably still look better and run smoother than my rig's setup? It's a toss up as I just can't picture myself playing it on a controller
