    Day Z

    Anyone play this?

    DayZ Mod

Looks like a lot of fun, but you need to have ArmA II: Combined Operations ($30 on steam)

Saw some videos and seemed like a lot of fun, purchased it to try it out

not tried it, uses ArmA 2, Mod is still in Alpha and some Beta Stages.

one of the developers or programmers with Bohemia Interactive Studios is behind the mod, so its basically from the same company that makes ArmA 2.

There's rumors that it would be included with ArmA 3 when it comes out, but the guy who made it wants it to be released as a stand alone game when that time comes.

For the time being it uses ArmA 2's engine. Which is shared with those games and "Take On Helicopters" as well.

Myself not a big fan really, as too many of the servers currently up are running this mod, taking away from the traffic of regular ArmA 2 servers, nearly 2/3's of the servers currently running on the network are running it.

The mod may be a great way to cash in on the "Zombie" FPS games or modes offered by COD games and what not, pulling in players from those games, but sadly its hurting the numbers for servers for the regular ArmA 2 series. Though making plenty of sales for BIS with needing ArmA 2 to run it.

The word is, after ArmA 3 is released, they may just keep using the ArmA 2 engine to release the game separate, since the Mod has actually more effectively used the same engine, less bugs than ArmA 2... which just goes to show the shift of priorities for this mod over the main games.

if the bugs can be addressed and fixed for the mod, why can the games get the same treatment.

I find some claims to the mod to be HIGHLY Inaccurate...

Found on the tab for What is Day-Z mod...

Custom Medical System - ArmA II's magic medic feature is a thing of the past with this medical system - If you get shot, expect to bleed and to lose blood until you're bandaged up. Lost too much blood? Then expect to fall over unconscious. If you get shot in the leg then you won't be able to walk until you get morphine so you can man up. Pain is also a factor taken into consideration so without pain killers after taking an injury you'll continue to shake. This is medical at it's best!
Um last I checked (last night while playing), when getting shot in ArmA 2, you DO lose blood and die at some point, shot in leg, you can't walk, or stand, you can crouch sometimes, but if you move you crawl.

don't receive medical attention quick enough you die. Medics can come and revive you, or heal you, or if your equipped with Bandages (Depending on the game mode) you can heal yourself.

but if your dead or incapacitated you have to have someone else revive you.

Sucks getting shot in aircraft, and your character is fading in and out as losing blood, and you end up dying in the cockpit, crash your plane, then have to have someone try and find your charred @ss out in the boonies to revive you. Usually better to just respawn and HALO jump back into the action.

But really don't know what those claims are all about.

Persistent Server - Fed up of spending so many hours working towards a goal or finding supplies and then the server crashes on you losing all your progress? Well with the DayZ server all stat's are saved to our external database so where ever you log off, whatever you have will be keep on you next time you come back in. This means you can spend however long you want doing what you want to do. As long as you don't die during the night!
Again, nothing new there, ArmA series has ALWAYS had persistent servers, our own ArmA 2 server has it enabled, so it continues to run even if no one is on or in game.

come back 12 hours later, may have been daylight when you were last in, its night time now.

Roaming weather systems such as T-storms, Rain, Snow, haze/fog, all depends on game modes, and whether map/mission makers incorporated that into their missions, but none of this is new.

Realistic "Zombies" with custom animations - These once human creatures will act and behave as if they have a heighten sense of hearing and smell but less sight, on top of that they use motion captured animations such as walking and eating from your unconscious body. If you look into any built up area you'll see them walking around waiting for their next victim which dares to venture in.
Nothing new here, custom Animations and scripting of it, as well as behaviors have been part of the series in the regular games for a long time as well.

Tons of new objects - We haven't just added in big things like weapons, we take pride in little details so expect to find things such as water canteens, a number of canned foods, junk and car parts (Along with more!) each of which have their own models, textures and UI imagery, once again all created to that high quality you expect in a full scale modification and we're sure you won't be disappointed with it. Nothing has been rushed.
Actually quite a bit of the content in the mod is directly "Borrowed" from ArmA 2 series specifically.

Hunting and Survival - Eating and drinking is a core part of gameplay, you can tell if you need something by a very subtle GUI which doesn't effect the atmosphere, and if you don't fulfil those needs. You'll die. Wandering animals can killed and gutted (with the right tools) to gain access to their meat which can be eaten so you live longer but also to gain blood. For once these animals actually have a use.
This is something new, adding sort of an RPG element to it.

Prior to this, there is a game mode in ArmA 2 that adds Real Time Strategy and Tower Defense like gameplay to the regular game, Warfare or something like that its called, each team has a set amount of funds, and has to build their bases and what not, take over control points, fortify and move on, while earning more funds to build more.

but adding an RPG element to the game is a bit different.

Heavy Optimisation - The DayZ server has been designed to give the best play possible. Custom coding and edits have created a smooth running world which can easily have thousands of zombies spawned at once!
This is new as well, would be great to optimize the base game like this, as having just hundreds of AI in the game in combat can break a server sometimes, with slide show framerates.

    let alone thousands.

basically what it comes down to is the mod is more or less a Fallout 3, combined with COD Zombie mode type game play.

Its nice to draw in more players from elsewhere, but would be great to have those players visit some of the regular ArmA 2 servers, instead of going back to the BF/COD games for their Military Action Shooter fill.

before anyone asks, the game only needs Windows XP, its not a DirectX 10 or 11 game, only utilizes DX9.

ArmA 3 will be DX10/11 optimized though. Whether DayZ continues on that engine, or stays with ArmA 2's, not sure, nothing has been said about it yet, other than at some point it will be a stand alone game.

But while your at it, give the regular Game a try as well, tons of mods and addons to install for it as well, MUCH more than the BF3 games.

Yes there are some bugs in the games, but all of us learn to just ignore or overcome the bugs.

though from what I understand, none of those mods or addons can be running while DayZ is running, otherwise you get all sorts of errors and stuff.

yeah, I spent probably a half hour to an hour just setting up my key bindings.

Testing the game each time to see if it works.

If you think thats bad, then adding ACE (Advanced Combat Environment) Mod to the game and its even more complex yet.

The game isn't a shooter like BF and such, its more Sim than Shooter.

Flight is more Sim like than BF and what not games, but not 100% true Flight sim either.

Though the Take On Helicopters game, which uses the same engine, is more sim.

Once you pick up on it, the controls, it isn't too bad.

the one control I miss is Jumping, since there is none in ArmA 2, however, they have a key/function that lets your character straddle over walls and such, to get over them.

But I have it set so most of my flight controls I use a Logitech Dual Action Controller for, most of my Foot and Vehicle controls are via Keyboard and Mouse (I use the 3rd mouse button for a double tap to eject from air craft, since I ran out of buttons on my controller.

But the game can take full use of keyboard, Mouse, Flight stick and Throttle setup, if you have foot pedal/rudders and yoke, you can use that too. Also takes full use of Track IR Setup as well.

Plus there's a mod or way to use a PS3 Eye Toy (or was it PS2?) or Xbox Kinnect, or a WebCam and its some sort of Open Source software to mimic the Track IR Setups with out having to spend all that money on a set up.

If you ever get into any of the ArmA 2 mods and such, beyond DayZ, this is the main site most download mods and add ons from:

    Downloads - Armaholic

This is one of the main games Weapon Mods I've been playing with a lot lately.

    R3F Armes - Weapons - Armaholic

Especially with the HK417 and Night Force Scope add on, on the rifle.

Been having fun using it for Sniping in missions, pulling off 800-1000M Kills from out of reach of most enemy's weapons, except emplacement and vehicle weapons.

Managed to pull off an 1100+ M single round headshot on an enemy soldier the other night with the HK417 and NF Scope.

We end up using a mod in our server that lets us spawn in content in the server, regardless of the map or mission running, that we have installed on our end (Client side), and let us use it in the server, though some content if others don't have it installed, doesn't show in game for them, while some content does.

but looking through the ArmA 2 and Operation Arrowhead sections, you can see the sheer amount of stuff that is modded and can be run in this game.

    Besides just DayZ mod.

Day Z does kind of make ARMA a bit easier, as far as controls and binds. But the game itself is pretty damn tuff. You have to find EVERYTHING, and by the time you do, you got trolled and shot by other people in the server, then they steal your stuff.

    (it's still fun though)

Did someone mention trackIR? Welcome to the FreeTrack website - FreeTrack optical head tracking software

I made my own free track glasses for FlightSimulator 2004.

I forget where I had the links, but yeah, the one I was told about was an Open Source version, and it allowed you to just use Face Recognition or something similar to how the Xbox Kinnect and the old PS2 EyeToy cameras worked, allowing you to use WebCams to do the same, they had a whole list of compatible Webcams and recommended HD Web Cams for best performance.
