nVidia: PS4 Not Worth the Opportunity Cost

nVidia purportedly passed on the PlayStation 4 due to there not being enough money involved.

"I'm sure there was a negotiation that went on," Tony Tamasi, Senior VP of content and technology at Nvidia told GameSpot, "and we came to the conclusion that we didn't want to do the business at the price those guys were willing to pay."

If that's how they want to spin it, sure.

I've got no real knowledge of any of this, but here's a thought: The PS3 used an 8 core unified chip. The PS4 will be using a unified 8 core chip. AMD can supply such a device. nVidia? Not as proven a track record there. AMD also is more desperate to keep revenue flowing, even at reduced rates due to their budget issues. nVidia can afford to bid higher and turn down offers. So it wasn't necessarily about the money. It was that AMD could provide a better product at a lower price, where it would cost nVidia more to produce the chip.

I'm probably wrong about all that. Heck, I figured they would use an upgraded Cell in the PS4 instead of going back to an off-the-shelf x86. So my track record on this topic is dismal.

nVidia could have likely supplied a competitive ARM-based CPU solution to couple with a potent GPU solution in a SoC package. As to whether studios would want to develop and/or port high-end games for the ARM architecture, well that could be an altogether different topic, but it would have been an interesting industry situation to witness IMO.
