I hear Warcraft III is a hot item, but I don't know how much strategy is involved.

WCIII is a good choice.
If you liked C&C, try C&C:Renegade, FPS but with stragety online.
C&C:Generals will be coming out soon as well.

Try Warlords Battlecry 2. It's unique in the RTS genre (mostly because of it's hero system) and is seriously fun! Each battle gives you experience points that you can use to increase the skills of your hero. It's rather fun to try new races, classes, and leveling up, etc.

Battle Realms can fall under RTS(Real Time Strategy), it's in 3D so it's cool...
Theres lots of small ones, go to download.com and look in the games/startegy part, you'll find some decent games there...
There also always in Age of Empire 2 with the X-Pac it's a fun game...
WarCaraft 3 is highly recemnded, but if you're not extreamly excited about it, don't get it, it's 50 sum dollers...Heh...
But I don't see what's wrong with StarCtaft, I swer the communty in that game is still H-U-G-E. That game has so many Stratgeys to it, it's crazy... I still play it... offten... and also they have MODs for it(they are called 'StarCraft Conversions') and some of the MODs are very cool, like this one: StarCraft Team Fortress It's still in develment, but when it is infact done, it's going to be soo good, it has Battle.net (The online gamming) support, and it's really going to be HUGE, IMO.

Hmmm trying to think of some "newer" ones..
There is some that have been mentioned like WarCraft III, C&C:Renegade, or the upcomming "Generals."
A strategic game that I am really into a lot right now is Empire Earth. It is an EXCELENT LAN game. You should really look into it if you have not played it already, I think you would enjoy it very much. You play as different Epochs starting at the Prehistoric Age going all the way up to the Nano age. (there are about 10-15 different Epochs I believe, and you upgrade as you go along so there are MANY MANY units to use.) Good luck on your findings

If you would like a modern day warfare RTS, World War 3: Black Gold might be worth checking out.
Misfortune, n. The kind of fortune that never misses.

The moon project is an absolute blast! It's about a year old but the graphics are still very good. Basicly, you get 3 well balanced factions, superweapons that are better than CnC's or Red Alert's but not too good, spawnable installations (great for LANs), and customizable vehicles.
The downsides are that it's a graphically demanding game, the campaigns are pretty dern hard, teh voiceovers aren't Blizzard quality (heck, they are barely Westwood quality), and a pretty cheezy storyline.
You can get it from www.gamestop.com
Also, check out MechCommander 2. Very, VERY good game. Unfortunately, it seems to only run on Windows 2K-based systems (ie It hates 98 and ME). It's a blast to play though.
Warcraft 3 looks to have some real awesome mods BTW.

If you like RTS's single player EE is an excellent recommend by me. I was completely amazed by this game. It doesnt have much replayability, but has a ton of playability the first time around. Its like Age of empires X. Its all in 3D, and has excellent graphics, and has ages stemming from the Stoneage to the future (14 ages I think).
If your an RTS fan, you have to get that game, even if its only to play through the single player. You build everything from cavemen to phalanxes to knights to mussketmen, biplanes, riflemen, machinegunners, jet fighters, bombers, submarines, cruisers, atomic bombers, to cyborgs. It pretty much emcompases pretty much everything imaginable in a historical RTS.
WC3 is good if you like multiplayer RTSing. I think SC was a much better game as far as strategy goes though. Theres been no really amazing RTS's lately though. (I would say SC was the last one, and Red Alert the last one before that). The best thing about WC3 is the multitude of custom maps there are, most of them heavily modded so that they follow thier own rules, almost like an entirely different game - the engine is extremely flexible to mapmakers. Its like getting dozens of minigames for free for play on bnet, which increases in numbers and fun level as long as mapmakers get more creative.
I'm a die hard Red Alert fan from way back. Played about 500 games on Westwood chat one month just to win some PC gamer magizine subscription in a tournament. That wasn't my goal, but I fell into third place....the basic consolation price spot.
So if you like RTS's, you gotta try EE.
The Civ series is awesome too. Civ 1 was my first strategy game that shot me into the whole series. Civ2 is simply amazing, and Civ3 is just Civ2 expanded some with better graphics. However, these are not RTS's, but Turn based strategy, so they are at a slower pace. Thier also not meant at all for multiplier and focuses on long singleplayer play. It also goes alot deeper than just gather resources, build an army, and conquer. You have to worry about citizens revolting and pollution and treaties, as well as infrastructure, trade, diplomacy and foriegn relations. If you dont mind running at a slower pace, and dont mind all single player, and want deeper gameplay than just building an army and conquering. I highly recommend Civ3. It has a higher learning curve than a standard RTS, but is also much more addicting and fulfilling when you sucessfully conquer an enemy.
