I think I have the crappiest connection on Earth! Unfortunately, DSL and Cable aren't available here yet. And too much latency with Sattelite. I like to play on-line. I've had good luck with SWAT3 and Land Warrior. I like realistic FPS games. Anybody have any ideas for other dial-up friendly games? |

I have not heard about bad latency with sattelite do you have statistics.
For FPS ping speed is not the only problem to look at. if you have 100 ms or even 200 ms delay you can still play quite good as long as it remains stable. If it bounces from 100 to 300 you may see more negative impact. That in mind what is the ping of sattelite???
But I feel your pain none the less. I went for some time trying to quake2, and UT. My pings were extremely unstable. I am now on cable and it is night and day to my old connection.
I saw a little improvement for some cost when I went for dual ISDN. You could try that but even with that I found the ISP to be the big downfall there. I would ping 40 to the ISP and 250 when I hit the first external hop. Several ISDN providers allowed me to trial their services and the one that did the best was a dam long distance call. You can experiment though with that if you can find a cheap enough ISDN modem.
I have one that I don't use anymore. if you made me an offer I might not refuse. So find out if ISDN is an option in your area. You can offset the course by using one of the isdn links for phone when needed. |

I believe sattelite ping is about 500-600ms on a good day! Way too much for gaming. The best ping I've had in months is about 300ms. Usually it's more like 400-500ms. And it's not stable at all! I looked into ISDN, no luck in my area. I also looked into alternative solutions such as wireless that uses cell phone towers, and broadband through power lines, there are lots of experiments like that going on around the country, but none around here. When I do a trace route test, it seems like most of my problem is in the first couple hops, which are my ISP's servers. It could help to go with a different ISP, but I still have a few more months before I can cancel Compuserve without getting penalized and having to pay like $200. I'm looking around though, because as soon as my contract is up...see ya! I tried telling CS about my problems, but they are no help. And according to the phone and cable companies, I may be able to get DSL and Cable within a year. I'd definitely go for cable over DSL! So, really I just need some good games to play on-line with my crappy connection, just to keep me happy for a few more months and possibly for a year. |

Good dial up games also are:
Tribes, Tribes2 and UT...
Quake3 will work in a pinch, though... But the first three games defintely!

General Satellite Limitations
Applications that are affected by high latency may have problems. Satellite latency in the range of 720ms - 1500 ms can be expected. These latency affected applications include interactive gaming, VoIP, and non-TCP/IP applications.

Q: How do games work with Satellite Broadband? (#2004)
A: For the most part, dismally. Any interactive, "shooting" type game will not work well with the high latency associated with satellite connections. Most gamers will be better off sticking with dial-up connections if they have no other alternatives.
From ; http://peripherals.about.com/library.../aa012101c.htm
Quote:
The reason is simple: it takes almost 400 milliseconds for radio waves to reach the satellite, and almost 400 milliseconds for the satellite to transmit radio back down to the dish. So even if all other parts of the system are working with low latency, the laws of physics demand that the round-trip latency will be almost 1 full second. The latency penalty doesn't hurt you much for typical web browsing, but it's a killer for network games, internet telephony or conferencing.

Novalogic games all seem to run well on their novaworld servers, as you have pointed out with land warrior, so in a month or two Black Hawk Down will be out. I have tried the demo on a 56k and it runs well.
