| Installing Diablo II and LoD on 2 comps
I currently have 1 legal copy each of the original game and the expansion pack installed on one computer.
I eventually want to install Diablo II and the LoD expansion pack on my 2 computers so I can safely transfer stuff between my expansion characters and give my guys an exp boost when playing private games.
Do I need 2 copies (legally purchased of course) of Lord of Destruction AND 2 copies of Diablo II? I seem to recall a rumour that you would only need 2 copies of the LoD expansion and not 2 copies of the original game and that this was ok with Blizzards licence but I could be mistaken. |

I'm not sure, but there is a way to do it with one. There is a program out called D2 Loader that enables you to load multiple instances of B.net from the same computer. It's aimed at muleing, but I think they've expanded it so that both characters are controable (one at a time).
If you end up having to buy a new Xpack and / or a new classic send me a PM. A bunch of us used to play this game addictively last year, but our college carrers can't take it anymore and we're looking to unload 3 or 4 pairs.

If you are planning on both PCs being on Battlenet then yes I believe you only need another copy of LOD. Battlenet is based on CD keys and LOD gives you a new one, which if I recall correctly, it only looks at the new CD key and not previous ones. Across a LAN though you don't need a different CD key. It depends on what you want to do with it. |

Thanks prttybean, that's the rumour I heard. Cool, it won't cost me an arm AND a leg to set this up then, lol.
I'll be doing both LAN and BattleNet for my single-player and Realm guys. |

With LAN games, you don't need 2 cds (I of course don't know, because I don't believe in doing anything illegal. )
When you want to play on Battle.net you will definetley need 2 different copies, or a certain thing that produces certain random numbers for a certain use. |

I have Diablo 2 and LOD. When I want to play LAN (and online) I have to have two copies of the game I am playing, Diablo II or LOD. I can't play LAN without 2 CD's because it wont let me boot up the game without the CD in the drive. I have tried removing the CD when the game has already loaded, so that I could boot up the game on the other PC, but that didn't work. I ended up just burnging a copy of my CD to use on my other PC. That works..

Regardless of the no cd thing, as long as you dont want both comps on b.net at the same time you could do that.
Yes you could essentially have both cd's on at the same time, but dont forget only one will be able to be on as the expansion.
If you have the expansion cd in, and a non expansion character then yes you could swap back and forth. But if you want to swap items from an expanded char or to an expanded char you will need expansion cd on both sides.
What I would suggest is trying it over a simple TCP/IP connection instead of going to b.net
Of course that only applies to open chars too...
SO in summary lol
If all you got is non expanded chars you're good to go (closed b.net players)
IF you're open players your best bet is for a tcp/ip connection.
b.net checks to see if your serial number is already online and if you are ... sowwy |

As far as I understand it I can use the same original Diablo II disk to install the game on 2 different machines and then I will need 2 purchased copies of LoD in order to play legitimately on Open or Realms with 2 separate accounts.
Is this correct? As long as I have 2 valid LoD disks (with the 2 different valid LoD cd keys) I should be fine.
I have no problem with buying another copy of LoD, I just wanted to know if I had to buy another Diablo II disk as well. I would hate to go about setting this up and then discover I needlessly bought another copy of Diablo II when another copy of LoD was all that was needed.
Thanks for all the replies
btw... all my guys are Expansion

You will need to buy another copy of LoD. Not the original D2 though. |
