I have a 56k and get ~160 ping in any HL mod. For some reason I get disconnected from my ISP at random intervals. HL gives me some NETSEND_PACKET_ERROR: NO ERROR but that is probably because I get disconnected. I installed windows ME on another partitin of my HD, installed HL and played it. After 25 minutes of playing, HL stopped moving, when I alt-tab'ed I noticed I had been disconnected from the internet. This happened 4 consecutive times.
The thing that gets everyone is that this ONLY happenes in HL, no other time, not even when playing other online games. That would rule out the ISP being bad.
Well, I am now back on XP, the problem persists. I ctrl-alt-deleted right after HL froze and noticed that an unusualy large amount of memory was being used by HL. I don't know if this is a problem, but I thought it was definatly odd. It doesn't normally take up that much.
Any ideas?

As far as my limited reasoning goes, see if there is an update/patch for HL, if none, re-install the game. |

I had the same problem when I used to play Asheron's Call on my dial up connection, I could surf for a year and a half without a disconnect but as soon as I went into that game it would cut me off the net in a heartbeat.
The way to solve it? well I think what I did was stop playing the game but later found out that if I opened up my computer and checked my modem for ID numbers and stuff and went and got the latest drivers for my hardware then it would work fine. Fortunately the Cable modems just got to my area and I was able to get back on high speed so I didn't need to go thru the hassle. If you don't know how to find the serial numbers cause like many people you haven't ever looked inside your tower don't worry, XP may be able to surf the net automagically and find them for you in device manager update driver setting, or you may wanna look into getting SiSoft's Sandra, it's a tool that lets you check out your computers hardware and general info about the stuff. You can download a demo from their website (sisoft.com I think if not just do a search on it). Good luck to ya laddy. |
