BF1942 LAG!!!!

I got BF1942 yesterday and it lags like crazy! Here are my specs:

PIII 860 Mhz
256 MB DDR RAM
Geforce 4 MX440
Onboard sound: Crystal WDM Audio

It runs very good with sound disabled and graphics settings on medium but when I enable sound my framerates constantly jump from 50 to 8 and then back to 50 then back down to 8 and so on. It is far worse than getting a constant 20 fps. Any suggestions?

And you wonder why it lags?

According to my friend Mr Windows Task Manager, BF alone takes 230mb of ram. Windows itself takes about 100. You NEED at least 330mb of ram to play this game MINIMUM.

I have Windows ME so Windows doesn't take 100 MB of RAM. Windows ME only takes I'd say about 50 MB of RAM or less ussually. I doubt it is my video card because with sound disabled the game runs perfectly.

check for an updated sound driver or even better a PCI sound card. Creative practically gives their SB Live cards away these days if money is a problem.

ShawnD1: disagree. i only have 256ddr and bf plays smooth(XP pro).

Willie: since you have onboard sound, the cpu has to pick up the sound chores. Your cpu is gettin overloaded trying to do everything. In BF, try setting the game to use the least amount possible of the cpu for AI. Also, a new vid card wouldnt hurt.

He just needs a cheap sound card to take the work load off of the CPU is all I believe. I have seen BF1942 run pretty smooth on a GF2 MX card and Willy has a GF4 MX card. His problem is sound proccessing. It's just too much load on that pIII and a sound card......almost ANY sound card will yield alot better results.

He doesn't need a new video card.
He doesn't need new/more RAM.

By buying a supped up CPU(P4) as suggested he would see better performance but, that CPU would cost him $200 where as a $25 sound card will give him what he needs......games with sound.

Using onboard sound with todays games requires high performance CPUs. Not to take anything away from your PIII but it is dated and needs sound processing help from a PCI sound card.
