What the heck is a DDoS attack?

We hear about them all the time lately, but how exactly do they operate? Google brings of plenty of sites on prevention, but I didn't find any on operation. Is it the same (roughly) as large bit pinging?

its basically a worm that spreads from to various computers and uses all the connections pinging to try and overload a single connection

A distributed denial of service as I understand it is launched by a worm that, when it infects PC's around the world, then in turn bombards a server/website/company with so much incoming traffic that legitimate traffic cannot get through and effectively shuts a site down.

okay a normal ping receives a response when you ping a machine right?

you know

ping 127.0.0.1

you get

reply blah blah blah blah
repy blah blah blah blah
reply blah blah blah blah

your computer waits for the response. and reports it


well with a DDOS you have a large scale of computers pinging or sending infortmation toa certain target

so in this case

in easy terms the computer doesnt have a chance to respond to the computer sending the information causing the target to freeze.

i.e
from my machine to yours its like this

the computer being sent the information is not given any time to respond causing it to lock up

Well DoS is when a lot of pings is send and computer can't keep up with it and goes to blue screen or freez up.
