I only got as far as reading the introduction but that was enough for me, I found the authors style to be not to my tastes and the book just seems to push the same old tedious rhetoric. Within the first three paragraphs the Open Source = GPL assumption had been made, which wasn't a good sign. That said the premise that software often has costs other than initial outlay seems perfectly reasonable (if somewhat obvious).
Strangely a quick google seems to reveal a large number of forums and message boards being spammed with low content posts regarding this publication. *Shrug*

The guy who wrote that is an idiot. Go to chapter 1, part 3. He has some stupid assumption that because Linux is free, every piece of software must be free as well.
from Chapter1, part 3: Quote: | That is, if you need, for example, a publishing program under Linux, you’ll have to pay somebody to develop it from scratch. And you cannot hope to reduce expenses by selling it to someone else. |
Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't Unreal Tournament for Linux cost money?? Maybe this guy should have spent more than 1 hour on the internet before writing a book about something he doesn't understand. |

Wasn't FREE supposed to mean that the source coding is available to all, not that the software was "free" for the taking? As in no copyright protection. As in you are "FREE" to change it to your meet your needs,.......Still wondering......................

Strange that your first and only post on these forums is regarding that steaming pile of bovine excrement and it's not even in the proper section - just the most frequented one.
. Hmmm, nothing in your profile either. I wonder...

I think this book is interesting, because it is based generally on true facts althougt the conclusions are not undeniable. |

It's a pile of crap. He draws on debatable 'facts' and twists them around.
It's an interesting thing to read, but as far as having links to the real world, it's not worth the hassle. We gave it a proper roasting over at usalug.
