My boss is looking for a notebook. He wants one that is widescreen. I gave him a suggestion of this one, and now he wants me to compare it with this one and this one.
Well, the last two are HPs, and i saw they had a pretty low customer satisfaction rating. I do like that they have the Geforce FX Graphics chipset as opposed to the first one i mentioned, which i found at acompinc.com. That one had a Radeon 9600. All of them seem to have tuners, and barring obvious things like processor, ram and HD size/speed - all of them seemed fairly comparable.
I haven't really been around the notebook scene recently - anyone have better suggestions? He likes the widescreen. I would prefer something that is not really proprietary (which -i may be wrong - but i believe HP is, considering that Compaq is, and aren't they related?) meaning i would like it to have standard RAM like a desknote or desktop - but i imagine that will either severely limit my choices, or completely eliminate my choices!
So, i guess the standard RAM isn't a huge deal, but compatibility is nice. I know Compaqs (at least some of them) are really proprietary in their memory cuz they want you to buy it from them. I'd like to avoid that scenario.
Any suggestions on a good widescreen laptop/desknote? A good company with a reliable product and trustworthy warranty?
Thanks in advance! |

I am not familiar with ACI notebooks, but the specs look good. HP/Compaqs that I have purchased for work have been notably unreliable and frisky.
BTW, if he is looking for something widescreen, but more portable, Fujitsu has some nice offerings. http://www.computers.us.fujitsu.com/..._pseries.shtml

Vaio's are nice as well. One thing I will say about the Fujitsu P series, I took Dells, Compaqs, Gateways and Fujitsu's to Afghanistan. The only laptops that came back without any warrantee work due to the talc-like dust were the Fujitsu's. We didn't take any Sony's and in my expierence they are good too.

that's about as real-world as you can get, Radar1797.
I'm in the market for a notebook too...for some wardriving and LAN gaming. I've got a steel Chieftec tower I built myself and I'm not about to lug that thing to parties.
the Fujitsu brand is not well known to me...I bookmarked the page
thanks for the info everyone, even though I didn't start this thread

I just got my CEO an Avertec notebook. It has an AthlonXP 2000+ CPU in it with a DVD/CDR-W drive in it. Comes with a 40GB HD, 512MB RAM, XP Pro, modem, LAN, wireless G and 14" display. It is around 4.5 pounds and a little more than 1" thick. All for around $1100. Avertec is based in San Diego i think, and their laptops have gotten some good reviews although there are few.
My CEO enjoys it and can get almost 3 hrs out of the battery. We also picked up one of those cell modem cards for it. Works nice. |
