| Please help! Havent burn able to burn a CD in XP for 2 years
I bought a Plextor 40x12x40A about 2 years ago and I havent been able to burn a single thing. I have tried just about everything I can think of. I have this installed on a P4 2.4 ghz machine running windows XP Pro with Service Pack one installed. The MB is a P4S533 with sis CHIPSET.
I have tried all different burning software such as Alcohol 120%, CDRWIN, Nero etc with no luck. Most of the time the CD gets about 1/4 way through the burn and it just says there was an error and to check the log. The log really doesnt say much more other than there was an error.
I am almost 100% sure that there isnt actually a problem with the burner itself because I get the same problem with my Creative 6x4x24 installed.
If anyone can provide any help it would be greatly appreciated...I am at my wits end and my harddrive is full....
Thanks... |

When is the last time you've reinstalled windows? it could be some funky config in there that's messing things up, although i couldn't tell you off the top of my head. Have you tried it on different IDE channels? |

Have you checked to make sure that you IDE cable is cut? And can your burner read discs? |

I'm sorry, but if it's been 2 years without success, and you've done all the things you say you've done, then I can't help but think your hardware is the problem. As Shadow suggested, look at your cables. Are you saying your Creative drive is not burning too? Hopefully bad cables. If not, then you might have a bad mobo. Good luck.

Tried different kinds of media? Sounds lame but it's all I can come up with right now. |

make sure you have dma enabled on all your drives (hd and cd)
is the plextor burnproof?
i had a creative 8x which wouldn't burn more than about 20% of a disc before crapping out under xp. works fine still in 98/me.
one of the xp patches from microsoft is for "cd burning issues" make sure to apply that. |

| i don't see the plex in there. also, i assume E-IDE Creative CD4830E:: DMA: Off
refers to a cdreader? as the dma is switched off on this thing, i think it may not be compatible with dma. try taking it out of the system and burning a disk. so what about that plex? any buffer underrun protection (burn proof, burn free etc)? |

This is actually a burn attempt with my Creative Burner that used to work fine on another system...now it wont work on this system or that previous system. |
