DoD standard HDD wipe?

As far as I know that only requires two things,
A sledge hammer and a incinerator.

Use FDISK in the MS-DOS product to wipe out all the partitions on your HD.

You are exactley right! The US governtment does not format hard drives. They believe that information can be contained ANYWHERE in the computer. They literally take sledge hammers and destroy everything (even the monitor).

As far as wiping the data on your drive... get knoppix ... boot up ... su to root ... then dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda should write zeros to the drive, erasing everything.

Not entirely true
It depends on the data that was contained.
Simple non-class is wiped, anything above then yes it will get destroyed.

Steganos Security Suite. Has a hard drive wiper, which "complies with DoD standards" for erasing secure Hard drives. I have used the top level of data erasing and it took a few days to wipe my 120 but I think it was wiped clean

Are their many people out there that are in the market for preowned computers to go through the trouble to retrieve information off a formated HD?, using the old fashion format c: prompt.

Just wondering.
Maybe I just don't worry about things enough.

the government uses electron microscopes to measure the pitting on the hard drive platter to analyze the data that was written there.

it's like pressing down when you write on a pad of paper. after you tear off one sheet, and write on the next, then tear that sheet off, the sheets of paper under that will still bear evidence of what was written on the top "layer"

Kevin Mitnick got rid of his hard drives (according to the book by Dan Verton, "the Hacker Diaries") by throwing them into a swamp. they were never recovered.
