Looking for printer
Hi All,
I'm looking for recommdation for a printer.
Main Charctristics:
1) User Friendly (ie a low occurance of driver problems, could go on with examples)
2) Fast
3) Will be printing text, no color, no photo
4) Small and light
5) Cheap, or cheap in bulk
This is for my field staff. Who only print reports, and have to carry them everywhere.

There used to be more portable printers than there are now. Pretty much all that are left are color ink jet printers from Canon and HP with high and higher per page costs. I'm partial to Canon, but I'd be looking to reviews on sites dedicated to mobile computing for better info.
. Citizen used to have a pretty slick little unit about the size of a large roll of 12" wide aluminum foil. But either they are not making them anymore or they just aren't selling in this market. If I recall, they used thermal wax transfer and the cost per page was pretty high. The only black output printers I saw on a brief search are thermal with 4" wide paper. You would think someone would be targeting this market with a basic b/w output device, alas...
. Good luck.

. I also saw the Pentax PocketJet 200 which is b/w but uses special thermal paper at about $8.50/hundred letter size sheets. But it uses no ink or toner. Unfortunately, they cost about $300., but will have a lower cost per page over their life compared to the ink jet units.

What ever happened to printer like the Canon 250. It was light, quick, and could take beating and still work. It was pretty much plug -n- play.

You're talking about the BJC-250? Well, they have the i250 now that's a bit bigger than a large loaf of bread and weighs less than 4 pounds. 3rd party ink tanks are cheap (I get mine from Tyler-Martin via eBay as they sell them cheaper there than on their web site - less than $3. for a set of black and color tanks). The price is around $50. Not a bad buy if you can find a place to plug in when it's time to print - or they could carry a small, charged-up UPS around with them... Well, it's hard to find the i250, but the i350 is about the same price and is a bit heavier. Newegg has them for $50 shipped.

June 7th, 2004, 09:37 PM #5What you've just described is a laser printer. The HP Laserjet 1012 is a fairly small printer. It's as wide as any other printer, not as long front to back as most printers, but it's rather tall.

I was surprised to find the Canon i350 in third place on PC World's Top Printer list with the i455 in second and printer Product of the Year (July issue which just hit my mailbox)... I guess as most of us have discovered - Canon rules!

June 10th, 2004, 04:05 PM #10I got mine at Best Buy for $170. You can find the 1012 everywhere because it's one of the cheapest laser printers you can buy.

You can get the HP 1012 from newegg for around $170. shipped - not hard to find sources via froogle. But at about the size of a small bread box and 13 lbs, it stretches the definition of 'portable' considerably.
