| I need a laptop. need some suggestions!
hey guys, im looking to get a laptop for myself. i have no clue what to get, however i do know that i want to spend less then $1500 CDN. (around $1000 US). I will use it mostly for internet, music, and some other apps such as photoshop, flash, dreamweaver, word etc. what processor platform should i be looking for at this price range? i don't want a celeron for sure.
there is one that i am looking at one right now. its the ASUS Z9 barebones, which a local computer shop will sell for $1469 with Pentium- M 1.5 ghz, 256 mb ddr 333 RAM, and 40 gb HDD. seems like a good price to me, but im not too sure. here is the link for this laptop: http://usa.asus.com/products/noteboo...0_overview.htm
would u guys recommend this laptop or something form a company such as Dell or HP?
thanx for any input. |

You should also keep in mind (AND BE SURE TO DOUBLE-CHECK IF SHOPPING SO).......
that the Mobile Celerons are really just P4/400's. (What did he just say?)......YUP.......P4/400's. (Well, the pre 512kb cache versions, anyway).
The mobile celerons are 256kb L2 cache and since they run on a 400fsb, there's basically no difference (at least that I know of) between them an a regular P4/400fsb cpu. I owned/sold a few of those and couldn't tell ANY difference.
Steve Hone's recommendation is a good one but there's also a super-cheap Dell 1000 (new model as far as I can tell 'cuz previous to 1150 was the 1100) and you can pick a basic model up for $674 shipped. (tax, if taxable).
Anyway, the Dell Inspiron Celerons are "mobile" so you'd get the 256kb L2 but somebody like HP/Compaq just uses the regular Celerons which are only 128. Something to consider! (And if you find a Celeron-M, those are supposedly 512kb L2.......niiiiiice!) |

The ibook G4 12" screen. It is a perfect machine for what you are going to do with it. The only thing I would reccomend adding to it when you have enough money again is to get more ram. The machine will perform better with 512 MB. The ram should be top piorty then any other accessory. You can always get an external HD if you need it. Don't let the 1 Ghz clockspeed fool you. With the 512 MB of ram it can be as snappy as at least a 2.0 Ghz P4. |

humm...the ibook looks interesting, but.....i want to stick to windows mostly because im too lazy to learn a new operating system. (unless its extremely easy to learn the mac OS). i also tried to go to the canadian dell website but its down right now. if a mobile celeron is just a p4, as DOOIN' IT says, then i will definately look at that. |

I would suggest the Sotec (also known as Averatec) laptops. They are thin, light and powerful enough to do what you described and you can watch a 2 hour movie on it using the battery. Here is the link for it via Amazon, but you can find it cheaper, but I was not sure who else ships to Canada. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...581261-5755222

I would go with the Asus you recommend int he first post.
1) Its using a P-M chip at 1.5ghz which should compare to a P-4 at around 2.4-2.6ghz, plus uses less battery power.
2)THe store is local, so it should be easy for you to take it back if somthing breaks under warranty
3) Has the biggest hard drive out of all the laptops mentioned here(Besides the ibooks, but those are over your budjet)
4) THe Radeon 9100 can still play a lot of games like MOH:AA or UT2k3 if you ever wanted to game on your laptop

Then I got my 12" powerbook G4. Panther(10.3)was very easy to use. It took me about 1 hour to learn the basics of panther. With tiger(10.4) coming out I can say that it will have a more user friendly interface then panther had. Panther had a more user friendly then jaguar(10.2). Macs are immune to worms and viruses. Mac OS X did have 1 trojan but, it was solved with in the first week when it was found. |
