Yay! I had a new computer laid on me, can't hook it up just yet, (gotta change the modem) but has anyone heard of TDZ?
This thing is a lot bigger than my Compuq (19" tall, 19" deep) two big fans in the back, nice weird dark blue case.
Poking around inside, it's got a Pentium II processor, 256mg RAM...but here's what REALLY surprised me, this thing appears to have TWO HD's!!!
Is this normal? |

Normal, but not too common.
I have 4, BTW. |

| Comps? Or HD's in one computer?
Okay, so I'm NOT crazy, it has 2 hd's. But WHY? One of 'em is a 4-gig job, not sure about the other. But it's not like HD's are so expensive, if the designer wanted 10 gigs, why not just use a 10-gig unit?
I also notice it's nice to work on too. There's some kinda device screwed onto a frame component that swings right out on a nifty hinge, laying everything open and accessible to inquisitive fingers. Nice. |

4 HDD's in one PC.
The advantages are kinda like not putting all your eggs in one basket. If you smack it, they don't all break at once.
Also, some things go faster when the apps have temp files on other physical devices. You're not trying to read and write with the same drive head, all at the same time. Less thrashing, speedier operations.
Of course, if you want RAID, multiple HDD's are a must
Oh, BTW...TDZ's are kinda high-end machines from Intergraph. These guys mostly cater to graphic artists and animators. Usually pretty nice machines.

Oh! That makes sense...thanks, Cadd! now I'll head on over to webopedia.com and find out what a RAID is! |

Dude welcome to 2002. I, myself have 3HDD and a CD hooked up on the primary/secondary slots and a CDRW on one of the USB ports. Specs look OK, but for those PS applications, you need bigger HDDs and 512 MB of RAM, IMO. | |

Knot,
Nice box! Nice software bundle too On my audio machines, I typically put applications and OS on the boot drive, but the actual files I'm working on on the secondary drive, streams them better and I can get more simultaneous real-time tracks. This way, I can also replace that drive for archival purposes pretty easily.
Oh, RAID = Redundant Array of Inexpensive Devices
There's numberous flavors of RAID, but they're employed to increase throughput and HD performance, create a greater degree of data integrity, or both. RAID splits the workload between several drives, with or without data redundancy, (user's choice).
