i think generally the best programs for this kind of thing are free becauce they are made by people having the same probs and not by buissness wanting money

Not necessarily. The most effective spyware app out there right now is Counterspy - 93% of known spyware found and removed according to PC World. Spybot and Ad Aware together can only get about 60%. It runs full-time too and catches malware before it gets in.
Counterspy is not free, but it's very affordable at $19.99.
The best freeware program is Spywareblaster, but Counterspy is more effective at prevention.
By the way - Microsoft Antispyware anf Counterspy use the same engine.MCSE, MCP and nut job

Spyware
I might throw Spyware Doctor into the mix. I had some pests that Norton AV was picking up but no one was picking them up. I use Adaware. Spyware Doctor and Microsoft Spyware (beta). I contacted Spyware Doctor and they gave me a solution to get rid of the adware. A lot of these programs work best in the safe mode after you have downloaded any updates. Spyware Doctor is not freeware but has some real nice features other than just spyware removal.

i think it is one of those swings and round abouts things.i find my setup suits me but then it is not going to be on everyones must have list.
i think as long as you have some form of protection against spyware/addware that is whats inportant

Please excuse my ignorance. I know enough to tip toe internally around my pc and hear every second day the benefits of Mac as an alternative. Do Mac's pick up spyware? Is all of this a 'not my problem' with a Mac or do they have their own issues?

June 23rd, 2005, 01:30 PM #67I believe what you're speaking of is the fact that over 90% of computers worldwide (don't hold my feet to the fire on the exact stats) are IBM clones running a Windows OS, so people gear the design of viruses, trojans, and spyware to effect the greatest number of computers possible. It's a numbers game, so the "return on investment" of the dirtbags' time dictates they write them for Windows. This is another reason why Linux is desirable, in addition to the fact it's free.

I have a question. I run MS Spyware Beta which looks fantastic on the surface. But I run it and show no infection. I turnaround and run Ad Aware and it picks up like 20+ infections. Am I missing something here.

Just curious, but how does Spyware Blaster work? I installed it and it seems to be blocking spyware (i.e. Spybot, AdAware etc. don't find any) but it is not running in the background like an antivirus or firewall. How does it block spyware when it is not running?

Try Thunderbird - another Mozilla program that is to Outlook Express what Firefox is to IE - a similar, but better, more secure, easier to use, unintegrated and more reliable program. Outlook automatically tries to access an e-mail which you've clicked on, so if it has a virus or bug in it it may crash ur PC. Thunderbird doesn't open e-mails unless you tell it to so you may be able to get rid of it with that.

Sygate or Spyware Stormer is a good selection of protection.

And don't get McAfee Security Protection. They are extremely useless.

Guys I need help fast!
This is the story:
I have a 40GB seagate hard disk which i use to store my items including my beats for d an upcomin album i am working on using fruity loops, infact to say the least, whole life is in that hard disk. I got a new 40GB hard from a friend who was travelling out of the country, and so i decided to re-arrange my files to have alot more space and re-organisation of my files and items.
I made 4 partitions earlier, from trying to install a new OS,but due to the new hard disk, i decide to make amemnds, so i wanted to Delete some partitions and make bigger space for belief of faster access in OS operations.
I successfuly transfered a first set of information which was resident in one of the partions 10GB, and deleted the partion, on trying to delete the second partition to make it come together becoming 20GB, but mistakenly i was deleteing d wrong partion, when i discovered, the it was trying to examin d drive, at the shock! i turned off my computer from d power button, but when i tried restarting d system, the BIOS could detect d 40GB hard disk, but when windows finishes loading, none of the partions or d entire hard disk is detected...please what can i do? I really need those files i got while i was in scool, some beats where done by then too, how do i get back d insipartion on how i used to writing those songs..oh i feel like jumping off a cliff..somebody help me..anybody help!!!

FYI Mac users spyware
to remove spyware from a mac: Click Safari>Empty Cash, then click Safari>Reset Safari.
Firefox: Firefox>Preferences>Security>Clear cash then clear Cookies.
Netscape: Netscape>Preferences>Privacy & Security then advanced (adjust settings as needed)
Get rid of IE if you have it as it is no longer supported by Microsoft, but if you must the method is similar enough to the above.I get all my News from FNC and right blogs, so I know I am fair and balanced.

Microsoft recently released a replacement for the AntiSpyware Remover beta with the new
"Windows Defender" free to download at: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx
Internet Explorer 6.0 is still supported by Microsoft as I.E.70 beta is now available to try out
for evaluation. You can find that at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...aredirect.mspx

It's an excellent utility for what it is. The one thing to remember is that no one program will
get everything. Adaware catches most ad bots along with a long list of browser hijackers. It
won't be possible to catch every new bug however. AVG Free edition often catches spybots
while being intended for viruses. Knowing how to track down pests along with deleting the
ones found manually where some utilities can only point them out is a good tool. The latest
Internet Explorer beta release has a new anti-"phishing" security feature added. For all too
many that will be good news since Microsoft's browsers are the focus of most of the attacks.

Any opinions on WinPatrol? Read same rave reviews on CNET. I'm trying it right now. I was using the trial version of TrendMicro's PC-Cillian, but it reminded too much of Norton, so I ditched it last night and I'm now trying a combo of WinPatrol, Avast, and back to ZoneAlarm. The first thing I noticed, was a lot less of my system resources were being eaten. Now I just hope I'm well protected with this new suite of programs.
Before I went with TrendMicro's package, I used ZoneAlarm, AVG, SpyBot and Adaware for a couple of years. Also Microsoft's spyware program. I must say that in terms of spyware apps, the trial version of SpySweeper impressed me the most. Although the trial version didn't remove anything, it surprised me with what it found. When I tried TrendMicro's PC-Cillian 30-day trial, which was fully functional, it found the same stuff and removed it.
Going to see how my new set of apps works, and I still might go ahead and buy SpySweeper. It's only $29.95. TrendMicro's package had everything, but it carried a hefty price tag of $49.95, and it did remind me a lot of Norton.

Although I don't have any input on WinPatrol, I will definitely give SpySweeper two thumbs up. It's worth the money, IMO, as it does find malware after running all the freebies.
