    free home personal spyware protector

The best in my opinion is Ad Aware. You can download a free edition from Lava soft. Just Google it. I use that plus Microsoft Defender (Beta 2) which is also free for the time being. Both are excellent.

Micirosoft's newly released Windows Defender that replaced the previous beta is
under review at this time for effectiveness. The MS Antispyware Remover it now is
replacing could locate a ton of bugs on one drive that was loaded due to one user
who didn't even want to learn how to protect a system. Lavasoft's Adaware SE is
an excellent tool for adwares as well as several types of browser hijackers. That is
free to download at: http://www.lavasoft.com The new Windows Defender can be
    found at: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

Please note that these are effective tools but will not stop everything out there.
The familiarity with several utilities as well as how to manually track down and see
infected files removed if not overwritten in some cases is one strong advice. There
is no one utility that gets everything especially since new ones are always a step
away from being circulated. A tryout on one XP Home system of Microsoft's latest
"Live OneCare" beta was swiftly scrubbed when it caused issues. That is found at:
http://www.windowsonecare.com/ Likewise the beta of Internet Explorer 7.0 is
being tried here with issues seen with Windows Explorer! Upon opening the Win
browser a blank web page will swiftly open along with it. The task bar contains a
smaller set of icons to replace the original larger buttons on IE 6.0.

Panda found like 200 spywares and a couple of hacking tools. Adaware only found 15, mostly in the IE cashe.

But I'm too cheap to buy Panda!

A friend of mine has this (malware?) on his computer. It wants him to buy it, but if you don't it shuts down internet explorer. Does anybody know how to get rid of this thing?

    Avast

Frefox addons: NoScript and Adblock. I handle cookies on a per site bases. The Internet setting in the Control panel (For IE) is set to ask at all times. I have Greasemonkey scripts that do things too.

Then there is a host of rootkit scanners I have.....

All in all, I have not been infected by any malicious software in a loooong time!

Some important steps to make your computer virus, ,malwares and spywares free :
    1. Try to delete all the temporary internet files from your computer.
    2. Try to uninstall the unwanted programs installed on your computer.
    3. Try to perform the "defrag" and "diskcleanup" utility over the specific time.
    4. Try to remove all the temporary internet files from your computer.
    5. Scan your computer by using any updated antivirus program.
    6. Try to install and download the "Antimalwarebytes" (freely available
    7. Try to update "Antimalwarebytes".
    8. Scan your computer using the "Antimalwarebytes".
    9. Please follow the same procedure for "Superantispyware" as you done for "Antimalwarebytes".

I wanted to create a post that others can refer to as a generic TRY THESE SOLUTIONS for all of the spyware threads

    What is Spyware

    Suggested Appilcations:
These applications can help to remove the problems from your machine.

(suggested applications have a free version)
AdAware SE (Updated around early August so make sure you have the new version!)
    Spybot - Search & Destroy
CWShredder Specific to CoolWebSearch (and variants) spyware but its spreading rapidly and is causing a lot of problems.

Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta Works pretty well, and may clean things the other two do not.

If these utilities fail to clean up the problem please run
    HijackThis
This application will create a log of all installed and running applications.
Please create a thread and include a copy of this log so we can determine what the problem is.
When giving a subject line for your thread, do not use "Help". Use a more descriptive subject like "Problem with spyware"

    Important:
Once you install Spybot/AdAware/MS Antispyware PLEASE run its update process!
Anti Spyware utilities need to be updated just like antivirus utilities so they must have the latest reference files to be successful.
(if anybody has a few moments post up a quick tutorial how to do it in each application please do so)

Also note that some "Anti Spyware" utilities ARE SPYWARE
They may work to clean up some spyware, but they may also install their own spyware so please stick with the popular solutions given above.

Another suggestion is to try using an online virus scanner such as
    TrendMicro House Call
Do a full scan to make sure viruses are not causing the problem.
If you prefer you can install a free full application virus scanner.
    Grisoft AVG Antivirus

Post any other suggestions, and maybe we can get it stickied.

Just for fun I'd like to say I solved 99.9% of my spyware/virus problems by downloading one ISO file.
    They call it Linux.
Yes it works much better than MicroSnot in "EVERY WAY!"
Yes it can be attacked too, just not quite so much.
My systems run a CRONTAB every day that scans for virus, spyware, trojens and rootkits.
Also have a Linux firewall with software that scans incoming data streams.
It is a separate machine. Has four Ethernet cards. My systems are each on different cards. Wireless ISP systems are on one card. My business network on another. Yet another for servers, WEB, MAIL etc. I then actually have one dedicated port for my home use machines.
My business and home occupy the same building but I like them to be seperate.
Security and taxes are the reasons.
Please don't get mad and flame me. I have come to love Linux and despise MicroSnot.
If your a techie then it's time you move to a Techie's system. Linux!

    Linux is UNIX on Steriods!
    MicroSnot is UNIX on LSD!
