What is G-mail exactly and why are there invites? is this to restrict the number of people who have them?

Gmail is Google's current beta e-mail program.
Since it is a beta program, a person has to be invited to use Gmail. Since just about everyone that wants a Gmail has one, or is close to getting one, lots of people have invites.
If you want an invite, PM me.

I haven't gotten invites to give away yet, and I've had it for three or four days.

Oh well, I'll live - I'll rarely use it.

A Google approach to email.
Gmail is an experiment in a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that you should never have to delete mail and you should always be able to find the message you want. The key features are:
- Search, don't sort.
Use Google search to find the exact message you want, no matter when it was sent or received. - Don't throw anything away.
1000 megabytes of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message. - Keep it all in context.
Each message is grouped with all its replies and displayed as a conversation. - No pop-up ads. No untargeted banners.
You see only relevant text ads and links to related web pages of interest. - It's free.
- Search, don't sort.

It is an overhyped webmail service to beat web fanbois into a frenzy over something as silly as e-mail.
Comon folks. It's just mail. What can anyone possibly do to make it more exciting. Text goes from your mailbox to someone elses, whoooo! Alert the press. My computer is bigger than yours!

It's e-mail. Which means it is not secure, by design. E-mail is not intended to be a secure medium.

sadly G-Mail has a great spam filter, my spam account, superspamman@gmail.com , doesn't have a single peice of spam in the inbox. Even though it recieves 1600+ peices of spam a day.
I was hoping to fill up the full gig.
