    Earthlink disconnects every few minutes...........

OK, so I wonder why the heck I'm always a sucker for troubleshooting after I build a system for a "friend"!!

Nice little AMD XP2400+ system running WinXP Pro and he's trying to get onto Earthlink. (I more than despise......dial up!!) Anyway, he's not up to broadband yet, so I leave the computer unconnected and let him install his own EArthlink.

Well, he does and finds a local #, gets up & running, but it only lets him stay on for a few minutes then kicks him off. I have no clue why 'cuz he's about an hour away from me, but the only thing I can think is that I used a Diamond Supra Max 56k modem and let WinXP Pro install its own drivers for it.

Could this be related to WinXP's driver?? I found the CD for the modem so I'm gonna send it to him and let him use the modem's own disc & see if that driver fixes the problem, but I'm just kinda' surprised he can stay on for a few minutes. I'd have figured it would either be off or on, not temporary. ????

    TIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah likely the drivers, you could try getting the latest drivers off the internet for him and maybe an update to earthlinks software. If that fails, have him call up the isp and let them fix it for him

Or replace the entire modem, that might do the trick. The best modem I've played with myself is none other than a Best Data v.92 - amazing speeds and latency for 56k.

OK, well I had the CD for the Diamond Supra modem, but since the CD was actually made just before XP came out, it wouldn't update to the CD driver (which was really just an NT driver). Sooooooo, I simply told the guy how to uninstall the modem from XP, then reboot & let it find it all over again & reinstall the software & voila.........it's working fine now.
