| 160gb SATA Hard drive only showing 130GB
I got a new system and with it a 160GB SATA Harddirve but it is only showing up as 130GB even though my BIOS will pick it up as a 160GB model.
Shuttle SN95G5 nforce 250 Ultra
AMD64 3500+
Seagate 160GB SATA
Win2K, SP4
Partition magis will only see it as a 130GB as well |

I was going to post this same question. I just bought the Seagate 160GB 7200.7 SATA II hard drive. When I plugged it in it read as 130 gigs. I know you lose some from the stated specs but 30 gigs? Any thoughts?
I think both VERT and myself would like some help.

****EDIT****
My Specs:
ASUS K8N-E Deluxe Nforce 250GB
AMD64 3200+
1gig Cosair
Pioneer DVD Burner
BenQ DVD drive
Seagate 160 7200.7 SATA II
Windows XP Pro
(Will be slipstreaming SP2 tomorrow, Tuesday)

Sorry VERT I wish I had an answer for you. Maybe someone else can help us out.
Is your HD the same models as mine? My model number is ST3160827AS.

I just installed the same drive in a new build last week and everything went well. I installed it in an Asus A7N8X-E though. What drivers did you use? Did you use the ones on the mobo CD?
I only "lost" about 4 GB I think it showed up as a 156GB HDD.
On a side note...LK I've been through you neck of the woods on the way to my parents house in Atlanta quite a few times...are the leaves turnin color yet? That's one of my favorite drives in the fall

Are you guys running service pack 1 yet? That'll limit your drive size.
Its also common to lose a few gb in the dec->binary conversion, but definitely not 30. |

i just recently bought a 200gb seagate and the formatted capacity was approx. ~188gb.
the poster has a 160gb which is showing as 130...too much 'loss' and definitely not normal.
something is wrong.
ps. you aren't formatting that 160gb as a fat32 partition are you? |

Updated my specs with the OS I'm using. I originally installed just plain vanilla winXP Pro. However, I needed to do this because I forgot to setup the Slipstream of SP2 before I took apart my other system. So I'm getting that together and then reinstalling everything with Windows XP Pro w/ SP2

for xp, you will need sp1 to see the larger capacity.
don't remember if sp4 covers the same w/w2k. |
