| WHAT Can You Do With a 64BIT Mobo/CPU that
you CAN'T do NOW with a 32BIT Mobo/CPU ?
Yeah, sure, being "future-proof" --but the LONGHORN OS isn't coming out for who-knows-ACtually WHEN --and the History of Computer Techno;ogy is that yopu have a hard time predicting what lies ahead. Remember RAMBUS and Intel's promise to back it ??
We'd all be rich if we could look 6 months down the Computer Tech road.
I vague recall reading something about LINUX at 64-BITs, so maybe its more here-and-now for our Penguin frenZ, but those of us --who for one reason or another are still in M$ prison, where's the percentage in by-passing all the cheap and good 32Bit Mobos on the Market--and maybe even buy new Memory just to be , well, "current".
No offense anybody but --
What is "current" about 64Bits ?

If you have a 64bit system, you can install Windows XP 64bit.
Also, not only is 64bit futureproof, but 64bit chips perform better in 32 bit apps than 32bit chips.
Also you do get bragging rights

rambus are still around and making newer, faster memory types. run your current rig into the ground before you go 64, but that may just be my frugal side speaking. |

64bit isnt that great of an advance, the ondie memory controller that accompanies 64bit chips (amd not intel) is great. |

I can't afford ONE G iof good RAM
So far the only thing that I've read of any practical coinsequence in thew Here-N-Now is that some 32Bit apps will will run better with 64Bit gear.
What sort of Apps and How much better ???
Braggin' rights to having a PC that can run faster, if only had something of consequence to run faster on ??
Let me respond to both points that ---Well, HOW $much$ $more$ Do-re-me will all that Co$t you ?
Look at the prices now of even the high-end 32Bit Mobos and the Barton CPUs --and their 64Bit counterparts.
May, just maybe, if some really really needed to build a new Computer right now --I'd give you that there is a chance that 6 months to 2 years from now, they will be slapping themselves on their back.
But to spring for the Buck$ if the present Rig is quite good and has been Tweaked and troubleshooted etc. --just to be at 64Bits seems like a waste of time and Dough.
Also, if someone really needs a new rig Right NOW, why not take advantage of the lower prices that..err.. the "old" 32Bit Technology sells at.
Worry about goin 64Bits in 2 years --unless some new "latest thing" is out there to planned obsolescence todays 64Bits Mobos and CPUs, maybe some innovation using 64Bits ---but in a somehow different way, requiring...well you get it.
[Let's hear some more theories about TODAY at 64Bits ! ]

| its not any specific apps, or the fact that it is 64-bit, it is just simply a better architecture...a 3200+ Athlon 64 will be much faster than a 3200+ Athlon XP |

Here's my view if anyone cares. Don't look at Athlon64 Cpu's as a 64bit CPU. Just think of it as a name. This name just being their successor to the XP line. (Just like the Jump from P3-P4 but not quite so drastic) A64 2800+ uses a different PR system than the XP line so in reality it will outperform the 3200+ and 3000+. With the A64 2800+ being cheaper or about the same price an XP 3200+ or 3000+.
These days buying XP line these days isn't worth it unlss you want to by the 2500+ regular or the 2600+ mobile. Anything above that is a waste of money. IMO the 2500+ is the best value in computer building these days because of it's ability to OC to 3200+ speeds with the included HSF.
| That was a rather simple explaination I posted in another thread. |
