MS Word question

Im using MS word 2002

I need to resize the width of the default text document when opening or creating a document.

I opened a word document that was typed and saved on a widescreen so now the default is 13" or so wide.

When I view the ruler, click and slide the dark grey slider over to 8.5", it just jumps back to the original 13" wide setting.

Anyone see this before? Or know how to change?
