Stupid question! What is MS Exchange Server used for?

It is a Microsoft based mail server. Aside from acting as an 'exchange' type of mail server it can also emulate IMAP, POP and HTTP mail services.

Hello,

.........and it is mainly used on a NT type network, whereas GroupWise is used on a Novell type network.

actually only on NT network... good ol' MS supporting MS lol

sendmail is a good option for NON MS networks

It also does some NNTP (newsgroups)

also support outlook web access (web interface to get email)

Exchange must be installed on an windows NT or 2000 server but then that server can be integrated into a Novell network. I have Exchange 5.5 installed at my work. I like it but it is pretty complex and should be installed on a pretty powerfull server.
