| Specs for a GOOD gaming comp
My current computer is an HP Pavilion 751n 512 ram, p4 1.8ghz proc.,64mb GFX card. Pretty bad comp for all the games I play. I was wondering what I would need for a really good computer for gaming that I would be building. What processor, motherboard and all that kind of stuff. I've been looking on newegg.com and theres just to much stuff on there lol please help. |

What is your budget...?
Do you know how to build a computer at all?

Lol, yes those both come into play.
What kind of games are you wanting to play also?
The first major decision should already be made. You want to game, so your system should be an AMD.

No I don't but my Uncle puts them together all the time. I'm sure i could figure it out I'm pretty good with them. I dont know about the budget 600 700 $? Is that enough? And I like playing FPS and RTS games like Warcraft3 and Elite Force 2. Also I recently bough DotMW which looks really bad on this comp. |

Assuming you can continue using most of your old parts, you only really need new ram, motherboard, processor, and video card.
off the top of my head i'd recommend a geforec 6800, an athlon64 for socket 939 (especially now that they have the lower end models), and maybe a gig of ram. It should be possible for around your budget. |

Processor MUST be AMD, perhaps a 3200+ Athlon 64.
Video card should be an upper end Radeon or GeForce card...right now, a good choice would be the ATI Radeon X800 PRO, Nvidia GeForce 6800 GT.
At least 1024 MB of DDR memory, with low timings.
High read speed DVD drive, at least, so you can play DVD games. I'm not really sure if there's a lot out there but there should be soon. (referring to DVD games)
Big power supply to give adequate juice to the components you wanna implement. I know that the higher end cards suck up a lot of power.
Good cooling, especially if you'd like to overclock.
A mobo that supports everything you want in your system, and a BIOS to allow overclocking (if you want).
...and a case with a window and a cold cathode to add that extra flair. |

Would using the DVD-rom and my Cd-RW one out of my comp be a bad thing or should I shoot for some new ones?

He maybe able to get a 939 if he does not need a new power supply, hard drive, he could need a case if he wants to use keep his old stuff in the other comp. I am currently upgrading to an FPS/RTS/MMORPG gaming system for 700 buck range. I am going to run this.
AMD sempron 3100+
ASUS K8N nforce3 250GB chipset mobo
Leadtek 6800 vidcard
1 gig of Kingmax pc3700
160GB 7200rpm samsung SATA hard disk w/ 8mb cache
NZXT Guardian Case w/ 400W power supply
All of that lands at about 700 something heh. I am using my old CD-rw and floppy drive and nothin else heh. Keyboard and Mouse are cheap lol, didnt include them in the list.
On a 700-800 buck budget you dont want to go with the 6800GT or x800pro, thats more then half of the entire budget. A great 6800 card is 275 bucks. Its an awesome card as well.

Both the processor and mobo look like suitable candidates for a good gaming PC.
But...
As a lot more people will agree, we can't stress the three letters A, M, and D enough.
For mobo's, one of the best brands that I recommend is ASUS. |
