Easter egg's?

Was just searching the net last night and came across a forum called Defcon, dunno if any of you have heard of it but thats not the point. They were talking about "Easter egg's" inside programmes like XP, i guessed they werent talking about real easter egg's but can someone tell my what this term means? and what easter eggs actually are? from what i understood there are little 'gifts' which that makers of programmes leave for purposes i really dont know. thanks very much.

ahh ok. So there is pretty much a easter egg in nearly every programme? Is there anyway of finding the sequence of keys to access the easter egg of any programme?
