| Help me pick my 64bit christmas present!
Well, over thanksgiving dinner tonight, I talked to all of my family members about what I want for christmas. I told them I just want 2 things, and that they can all pitch in together so it won't be to expensive for just one person. My present of choice is of course a 64bit CPU and mobo.
So, my current pick is an AMD 3000+ 939 chip with a Soltek mobo. Is soltek any good? It got 5/5 stars on newegg.
Does anyone else recommend a cheaper solution? I want a 939, as a 754 3000+ is only $1 less than the 939 version.
You can recommend any other online stores along as its good as newegg.
Thanks,
-Biz

I've seen some really nice reviews on the Soltek mobos, and they seem very nice looking in the photos as well. The SL-K8TPro-939 needs a BIOS flash to be able to support dual-channel RAM at 400MHz, just to let you know.
The A64 3000+ S939 is a beast at overclocking, the average is about 2.5GHz, that's about a 700MHz overclock!
I'm also highly considering upgrading to this setup from my XP 2400+.

And no, PC2700 is way too slow for this chip.
PC4000 if you're going to do some serious overclocking (2.2GHz+)
Use PC3200 for the absolute least, but even then I'd recomend better RAM. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduc...156-012&depa=1
I recommend that if you're going to go with PC4000.

Damn. That means I need to ask for memory as well. I don't think my family can fork out that much money
And I can't ask for money as if I get money for christmas, my parents get it because I ow them $809 for car repairs.
Also, whats a good heatsink for a 939 chip? |

I have the 754 3000+, with the DFI LanParty UT motherboard, it's supposed to be the best overclocking board for 754. You might just be able to hit similar speeds as to the 939...
Pick up some OCZ PC-3200 platinum rev. 2, and you can hit DDR600 |

BTW, lots of people choose the Thermaltake Venus 12 for that 64 3000+ and they say it's a great combonation.

Would I need to reinstall windows if I replace the mobo? Or will it be able to install all the drivers correctly through the normal hardware detection? |

You would have to just do a repair, instead of a whole reinstallation of windows. |
