| Help with Dell 8100
hELLO EVERYONE
NEW HERE
I think I am posting in the right area
Anyway, I just joined this board after realizing just how professional everybody seems to be around here. And after reading some FAQ's and answers, sounds like some of you guys know more than computers themselves....anyway real quick..
I consider myself a between a novice, and maybe an intermediate
I own a 1.3 P4 Dell dimen. 8100, 128mb. Two HD's. C is 55.5gb and D is 19.55gb. I have a cd rom and a cdrw/dvd. purchased the mad dog 4 in . BIG MISTAKE!!! http://www.officemax.com/max/solutio...OID=-536892938
Used it only once and now the system won't recognize the blank cd. Funny cause it plays the DVD's and audios. but thats about it...Do they just suck?
Oh yeah I am gonna be ordering 512mb of ram. Once that is added, how do you think my computer will fair overall. Cause 128 is pretty slow. And what else do you think I can do with this system?
And last question ..do you think this system is a sleeping giant? |

Hi SteeDog, Welcome to TechIMO!
I have had no experience with the "maddog" brand of CDrw drives.
Did you install any software with this drive? I think that when you installed the software it changed the file associations for your device. I suggest that you ensure that all of the software is properly removed.
Which type programs do you want to run??
Increasing to 512 for your machine will speed up most of your programs. You didnt list what type of graphics you have, is it integrated graphics or a card in the "agp" slot? Changeing the graphics card is generally the best thing to speed up visual type programs.
I wouldnt call it a sleeping giant, just a good solid computer that need a little help.
BTW DEll technical support questions: http://search.dell.com/results.aspx?...t=sup&cs=&c=us

Well no, i think you may have inadvertantly posted this in the wrong section. Suggestion box is for suggestions as to how to improve the forums. Something like this belongs in a place like the general tech support or discussion forums. Just to let you know for next time.
As for the cdrw problem, have you tried another cd? Maybe the CD is just the problem?
upgrading from 128 to 512 will definately make a noticable difference, i think you'll be pleased by the performance upgrade, especially on WinXp, i know i was.
And for your final question.... No.... not really. 1.3GHz isnt anything special, im sorry to inform you. |

Every other time I tried to burn something, It said please insert CDR medium or something like that. But then when I put a DVD or CD in , it plays fine. What if I go into the device manager section and remove both E(CD) and F(DVD/CDRW) drives and let the computer pick them up on reboot? Will that even do anything. I just find it kind of odd that this F Drive recognized everything else except a black cd.

I did install the software that came with it. Hmmm so how do I fix this changing of associations..Thanks a million. The only thing I use my non sleeping giant computer for is basic apps. Oh and DOOM3 which I suggest you guys should try playing on a P4 128mb system. Very fun. |

You must use the correct media either CD-r, CD-RW.
Dont buy but like this media: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...lance&n=507846
Make sure you get compatible media for the maddog drive, It should say whitch type with the instructions/manual.
Try this first and let us know if this works/doesnt work. |

Oh I see..
Okay well I will go out and purchase some Brand name Blank cds and see if that is the problem. Oh yeah. I will also list what kind of video card I have. If I am correct, I do remember seeing something like nVidia under display adapter but I will check and get exact version and name. |
