should i give this motherboard another chance?

the board is a gigabyte ga7-dx
it has a xp2000 cpu in it
and a generic stick of 256 MB ddr266 ram.
it worked fine.
suddenly the system died.
i took it all apart, and between a pin of the ram and the notch in the pins was a carbon spot. dead ram!!!
so heres the question
should i try another $30 stick of ram in the board,
or is that a stupid idea, cause the board is bad and likely to fry the new ram?
should i give the board another chance?
or is it a ram killer?

I would try to save it naturally remove old ram and use the other socket for the new ram, make sure you check the old socket carefully for shorted pins, clean the carbon off

The only time I see were you must have RAM in a set slot is in dual channel and in some servers avd other machines like printers and such. One of the truble shooting steps to check if the memory is bad or the MoBO is is by changing slots.
