64-Bit Upgrade
I'm trying to figure out what kind of upgrade would suit me best.
Right now I have:
AMD Athlon XP 2400+
512MB PC2700 DDR RAM
GeForce 6600GT 128MB AGP8x
I want to be able to get at least 3GHz (P4) or equivalent (AMD).
What CPU/motherboard combo would you suggest?
I saw S939 3000+ before for only $150, but I can't find it anymore.AMD Athlon XP 2400+
512MB PC2700 DDR RAM
120GB 7200RPM Hard Drive
GeForce 6600GT 128MB

If you are going to go for an upgrade...and you wanted it to be future proof for a while...what I would do is this....in a few months, get an athlon 64 3500+ and wait for the nforce 4 motherboards with sli technology (if you do this...you will need a pci express video card..no agp ports) processor is under 300 bucks now...it's around 270 i think. The reason i suggest a 3500 is because it is the cheepest socket 939 which is what all the athlons are starting to use. The socket 754 of the slower 64 bit processors is already being phased out
...lol. Also..I'd suggest you do your shopping at www.newegg.com great site! that's where i do ALL my shopping. I don't like to go anywhere else...they may cost a few more bucks, but for the customer service, it's worth it.

Seeings how he just bought a 6600GT AGP I dont think he wants to get rid of it that soon =)
IMO your cheapest bet is going to be getting an Athlon XP Mobile 2600+ (like 90 dollars) and a decent heatsink, and you can easily overclock the hell out of it (because the multiplier is unlocked).
My roommate had one of those running at 3500+ speeds and it was running at 30C on air cooling... really impressive stuff.Last edited by VHockey86; December 23rd, 2004 at 11:07 AM.
