Ok, first off, I'm an AMD girl, what can I say, I like to game
Right now I have a S754 A64 3000+ @ 2.24GHz, but have been tempted with duel Xeons at 3.3GHz each.
What could I expect gaming wise from the Xeons? Going to kill my A64 or right around the same? Will be going with a 1GB of DDR400 and the 9800XT, but debating whether to get the Xeons or not. |

Just go with dual 2.8GHz xeons (nocona core) they will whip the crap out of a single A64. |

Good question!
Personally, since I only do major upgrades every 2-3 years . . . . and Xeon's are 32bit . . . . and the future is in 64bit . . . . . I'd stick with the A64's.
Why not upgrade to dual Athlon/Opterons?
I do currently have an old dual Xeon server, and I'm considering upgrading/replacing it with a dual Athlon/Opteron if my money comes in, the prices are right, and there's enough money to cover it.

For gameing the Athlon64 would probably still be faster as no games take advantage of SMP. But all around performace I would love a Dual Xeon over a Athlon64.
But when dual core chips come out games may start useing SMP then the dual Xeons would be nice.
If the price is right then dual xeons are fast just currently no benifit for gameing. |

Harder | The nocona core based Xeons are 64-bit.. |

for high end dual processor platform...the opteron is the way to go. the intel architecture still has the limiting memory bandwdth which AMD's hyper-transport blows away.
Cook_1...if gaming is your thing, dual processors are of zero benefit. |

Ahhh, but dual core A64's are here. So why dual Xeon? pfff. Id wait till spring. And get the dual 64 core that works in existing mobo's. Get a single core to tide you over.

EXACTLY. Amd has owned intel when it comes to multiple cpu's since the advent of hyper-transport. And with the A64's integrated mem controler it just got better with dual core on one cpu! |

Cook_1...if gaming is your thing, dual processors are of zero benefit. | The comparison was between Xeon and AMD64...not the opteron which by the way is more expensive than the xeon. |

'they're beat the crap out of..."
and if you're such a sticker for details, note that the poster asked about 3.2 xeons, not the 2.8 youmentioned. in which case, the opterons are cheaper than the 3.2xeons. |
