| Friggin computer doesn't detect maxtor external hard drive =(
I have a 160 GB Maxtor external hard drive, It was working yesterday and when I turned the computer on just now i can't access the hard drive. When I plug it in it is detected as USB mass storage device, when i look in device manager i can see "maxtor one touch usb harddrive" and it says it is working properly...the little bubble even comes up and tells me my device is installed and ready to use but when i click on my computer i don't bloody see it. When I access disk management i don't see the drive anywhere. I don't wanna open it up because for one it'll void the warrantee and two i have a laptop so it's pretty pointless... i don't understand why it would just stop working out of nowhere...so disappointed...i have some stuff i'd like to get back Please if anyone can help it would be much appreciated... |

Hi,
Welcome to Techimo!!!
With your Laptop running try unplugging the USB Device and see if you get any sort of warning or error.
Plug it in again and see if you can access it.
My Sony Vaio Laptop sometimes looses USB Devices and I find if I just unplug and re plug after 10 secs or so the thing works ok. It's normally after a reboot that it seems to lose them.

Hi,
Wow, your telling me you formatted your c drive and re installed Win XP in the 22 minutes between your first post and the one where you said you had formatted. That is impressive.
I think Format should be used as a repair tool a lot further down the track than where you seem to have got from your couple of posts because as you now know formatting isn't the answer to all problems if you still have the same problem following this format.
There are many very knowledgable and skilled people lurking here on this board who will give a lot of their time and expertise to helping members who have a problem.
Most of these people are US based so if you post a question in the morning European Time don't get dis heartened if yu don't get a response straight away you will normally get the most reply action early afternoon.
Are you posting about this problem on several different BB's? |

Try assigning your drive a higher drive letter. See if that helps.

| haha, no it's not like that. I formatted before i started the thread.
I assume you assign a drive letter by going into disk manager? if so, the hard drive doesn't even come up in there =/
and yes, my laptop comes with system restore disk that format and take it back to the original state it was in when i bought the hunk of junk. |

Hi,
Can you unplug the external drive and plug it into a different USB Port, this is what I have to do some times when I am replugging as described in my post above to get my PDA to active sync.
Another USB Device that has this trouble is a Sony Micro Vault. |
