New build + scanner advice

My Father, who will be 79 in June, wants a new computer and scanner to archive all of his photos and slides from the late 30's until now.

He's obviously feeling a need to pass on to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren a visual history of his life and 60+ years of marriage to my Mother.

He realizes that his PII 450 probably isn't up to the task and I have to agree with him ( my 14 year old built it for him )

He wants something basic that will have the ability to effectively scan and burn his archive to CD and will be "79 year old" user friendly.

Suggestions?

What type of money are you looking at spending?

6 to 8 hundred dollars not counting software.

Are you wanting to stay with Intel of go to AMD? AMD CPU tend to be cheeper then Intel. I would go with any of the lower to mid range Motherboard and cpu. I should think 2x512 MB memory modules would all you would need and not top of the line. You can pick up a vid card for 75 to 100$. Are you keeping the old case or getting a new one. A 350w PS should be good too. As to brands and such each person will have their picks. I would use nero for the burning software. Do a search and you should find a bunch of threads on burners.
