    Heatsink Install

    Hi,

My new processor comes with a heatsink and some silver glue stuff. How do I install this? Do I use the glue sparingly or spread liberally or? I just center the heatsink on the processor as best I can right?

Also, as a side question, can a stock, non-overclocked processor benefit from a heatsink? Thanks!

what kind of processor is it?
if its an Athlon64/P4 spread the silver paste over the entire heatspreader. Make sure the layer is really really really thin.

If its an AthlonXP, Duron then spread a thin layer on JUST the core.

Also its very important that u check to see if theres no Thermal Pad on the heatsink (grey thingy under the heatsink) if there is, wash it off using 90%+ alcohol.
Also, as a side question, can a stock, non-overclocked processor benefit from a heatsink
what exactly do u mean? All processors need heatsink, or else they would fry...

    Hi,

It's a K6-III+ I didn't realize they all had a heatsink. This one comes with a evercool or something. I keep hearing about overclocking processors needing special cooling so I thought all these special heatsinks were for overclocking...

Yeah, this one's for my old pc that I'm trying to get back on the road. I wasn't going to mess with the processor, but things are getting a bit out of hand with that one...
