Password protect a folder

How can I password protect a folder with WIN XP PRO or a second party software(free). What I have found out is that the drive must be formatted in NTFS to be able to do this in WIN XP PRO, this one must be formatted in FAT 32.
Or the files or folders need to be stored in a compressed folder, then use the operating system function to protect the files.

A few years ago, while on Windows 98 I used Magic Folder. Did exactly what you're looking for.
I don't know if it still exists.

Very very simple. Make the folder into a .zip (or compressed) folder. Go inside it and click file/encrypt/ the wizard will take you from there. If you want to hide folders use a program like Magic folder or windows secrets.

But i suggest using encryption for business like protection, secondary programs can be easily hacked and are slow and inefficient!
