I have a screenshot of me getting 16k/sec for about a min from kazaa...it
NO WAY....the download, U2's superbowl performance is now playing on VH1...oh wait, just the song, not the actual performance....anyhew..... ....whoa cool, live performance...sick....yeah, anyway
it fluctuated between 12-16k/sec until about 1.5mb was downloaded, then went back to 5-6k/sec .
grrrr wish I had SOME form of broadband...instead now I have to set my alarm and wake up at 5am to get offline (blocking the freaking phoneline and other people from going online...). Even ISDN with dl speeds of 25k/sec would be kick@$$ compared to normal 56k...
hmm maybe I should get a phoneline installed.....that's like $30/month by itself
Oh well, DSL will come to this area eventually

| That could be because it was trying to calculate the average download speed as you were downloading the file, the number you get at first is not really your transfer rate. The best estimation to go by is the number last seen at the end of the download, that way it had as much info as possible to "average" your overall transfer rate.
Of course, this is only my opinion, I could be wrong.
storm2k:
For all we know though that number could be talking about bits, after all, you were using a 56kbit modem
8bits = 1Byte
50.8kbits/second = 6.35kBytes/second

Nice! I am amazed you were able to get that. Though one I was able to get about an average of 11-12k per second on Napster a long time ago. I was able to do so for about an hour. It was quite nice. |

With my Aopen winmodem on dialup, I was able to get up to 25kbs for extended periods.(I have a screenshot somewhere) 11-16 kbs were common, and it was rare not to be able to get a combined 9kbs on multiple downloads. Not broadband, but it still blew my mind. If they could consistanly push 25 kbs through dialup, I might just get rid of my cable modem.
Nah....  |

it seems higher-quality (heh) softmodems actually get better speeds...
I have a friend with a cheap dell (lower end) that will sustain 11k/second for 10-20MB download... the FULL DOWNLOAD.

yeah 56k is like a scooter on the freeway. the only viable broadband solution for me is satelitte and thats way too expensive for such high latency. im amazed if i get 5 k a sec. im like 42000 ft from the nearest co .
