Maxtor external hard drive problem

Hello ,

After reformatting my computer(xp), I hooked up my external hardrive(maxtor 5000xt) back to my computer using a firewire connection through my Soundblaster soundcard and the external hardrive does not show up in My Computer. I then went to Computer Management, and it shows that the drive is,"unallocated" opposed to healthy. I understand that the fix for this problem is to fdisk /mbr, although I do not know how to do it. I was wondering if you could write the steps down, or at least show me where to go to find out what I need to do.

p.s.-The external hd was not hooked up to the computer when reformatting my internal hd.

In looking at another post, I read that there was a piece of software required for the Maxtor external drives - Retrospect, I think? Stating that it was required to be installed for the drive to work properly in Windows.
