    Xp doesn't recognize USB port

I upgraded the OS from win98 to XP pro over the weekend but xp doesn't install the USB. The computer is an old PII. USB 1.0. XP is updated with the latest updates and SP2. Any suggestions how the problem can be resolved?

How about the system? I'm going to guess that the manufacturer did not issue an XP drivers for the USB controller. You may need to get a PCI card (or would that be ISA?).

The USB port is built on to the board. I thought about buying a pci usb board but I was hoping somehow I can find drivers because the PC isn't worth spending money on.

Go to the manufacturers web site and see if they have driver update for the usb controller.

If they don't your probably out of luck.

Pending on the mainboard - XP may not have specific drivers for the particular chipset of the USB ports. Best bet would be to check the mainboard's manufacturer's website for drivers. (as mentioned above)

Before doing so, make sure that the device is actually being recognized in the Device Manager. If so, it should have a yellow ! next to the USB device. If it's not being detected in the Device Manager, check your system BIOS to make sure that it is enabled and that it is assigned an IRQ. If you need help doing so, you might want to post the make/model of your mainboard.

Last resort is if the MB manufacturer is using a third party controller, and you can find it on the board, you can usually find the name and model # and get drivers from their website.
