Right, recently I've been trying my hand at upgrading my 1.4ghz 256mb RAM computer into 2.4 Ghz 512 RAM.
So far, I've bought a new MoBo, Processor, PSU, Two sticks of RAM and a new fan.
When I turn my PSU on, I'm getting the Motherboard LED light up, but when I hit the power switch nothing happens. No lights and no bleeping. I've checked and -all- my wires are in place as they should be.
My current specs are these:
New-
ASUS P4V8X-X
Intel Celeron D 2.4ghz 533 FSB
2x PC3200 256 RAM
500w PSU
Old-
128mb PCI Nvidia 5200FX
40GB HDD
CD R/RW 8x
3.5 inch Floppy.
I'm positive all my old stuff works, and i'm presuming that the problem lies with the new components. Here's some insight into how this started:
I installed my MoBo, Processor and RAM, when it came to connecting it all up I realised my PSU didn't have a 4-pin CPU power cable, so I switched to another, newer PSU that I previously discarded as broken. When I plugged it all in and flipped the switch it sprung to life.
However, my display was acting a bit screwy. When changing resolutions or opening a folder or game the screen would blink for a few seconds. I removed my PCI Graphics card and moved it down three slots, when trying to turn my Comp back on it didn't work. I moved it back to it's original possition and still no dice. I thought this to be a PSU problem so I replaced my old one with the 500w as listed above. Still no dice. I've been trying to build this thing for a month and it just won't work anymore.
I'm at my wits end on what to do and would -really- appreciate any insight you guys could give me.
-Sorry if this is posted in the wrong topic. |

Have you tried removing all the components except for the CPU, a stick of RAM, and the video card? Start with even less maybe, just the CPU, and a stick of RAM. Not sure about that motherboard, but it should give you a beep if everything is okay with that. Then add the video card, then hard drive, etc. Check both sticks of RAM that way.
I'm led to believe that it could be as simple as something not being mounted properly, like the CPU or a stick of RAM, since it was flaky, and then stopped working after you opened it up. It's unlikely that the new components are bad, but not impossible.
Welcome to TechIMO. |

Unplugged all but one stick of RAM, the CPU and the MoBo.
Still nothing.
EDIT: Thanks for the welcome.
EDIT 2: My MoBo has yet to beep once throughout all my work on the computer. I don't think it's capable.

Well, sounds like either the board itself is shot, or installed incorrectly, or the CPU is bad.
Did you make sure to remove all the unused standoffs from the case after removing the previous motherboard? You get random metal touching the underside of your motherboard and it can cause all sorts of neat problems. |

Didn't remove any of them. I thought that If they were the problem it wouldn't of worked the first time. |

Can never be too careful. You might have bumped and shorted something when you moved the graphics card originally. Try running the board out of the case, like on a wooden table or desk. It's kind of a pain, and I'd only do it as a last chance, but if you've remounted your CPU and RAM and it's still not beeping, I can't think of anything else it might be.
Did you try something simple like clearing the BIOS via the CMOS reset jumper (that the board should have). |
