    HD shared over network?

     
    can i hook a external HD up to my router and make it so only my 2 computers can get to it?can i even hook up a external hd to my router?see i want only me and my 2 computers to be able to get into it not my mom cuz she on router to

    do i have to like install windows on em or how does that work?r they just plug and play?

    Looks like some of them have a web-based configuration. But hes suggesting you buy a new HD, if you want to use the external HD you have now it will have to hooked up to your computer and made as a share. But i could be wrong

    they are just network storage devices... eg. cant install windows on them as far as i know. just plug them in and use them for file sharing or backups.

    aye, im pretty sure you can buy just them with out hard drives and just add your own...
    just have to have a look around.

    I've been using the linksys nslu2 for awhile for storage and havent had a problem. You can hookup 2 usb drives (like a 160g external drive and a removable flash drive).
    The external harddrive has to be formatted with there software, they run some sort
    of linux software to see the network..
