Where dose my PING go?

Am I pining the pc or the DNS? On my network I will ping a pc's name and it will bounce back a IP addy. But is that accurate?

What information are you trying to gather?

You're pinging the PC. If you ping a name rather than an IP address then it will first try to resolve the name to an IP address, then it will ping that IP address.

Well in a list of IPs and PC names that Iam always messing with and chaging because some PC are being exchanged for others while I or some one rapairs it or them. And one of my jobs is to keep a database of PC names, IPs, drop# etc... Sometimes when I ping a PC name the IP addy does not match the one listed in DNS? And I am a bit confused also sometimes I ping two different PC names and get the same IP?

There is a free program that goes out and pings a subnet of ip addresses

works great and will make your life easier
