sound doesnt work after installing windows xp

i just installed windows xp and it worked but when i logged on there
was no sound. i looked at the start menu the sound icon wasnt wasnt there.
do i need to install a sound device or something.

I would install the motherboard drivers for the on board audio.

Check your Device Manager for any items with a yellow ! next to it. Most likely XP did not have a driver for your sound card/chipset and they will need to be installed from the manufacturer's installation CD. As Redfox mentioned, if it is an onboard sound device, it will be on your mainboard's driver CD.
