It works fine for me. It could have just been a bad install. Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling it? Since you used system restore its a good idea to bring your drivers up to date as well.

hmm...try regmon or filemon (google them) and look for access denied errors...probably some file(s) are protected and can't install right. Make sure you delete the itunes folder from program files (just make sure there's no music in it..idk where itunes stores it's music!!)

    I HAVE DEFEATED APPLE!!!!

basically, i figured that Itunes would not create a new audio player, that would be stupid for apple to do. so i assumed that they would base it on quicktime, their already existing player.

so i deleted quicktime from everywhere, including the registry.

then i reinstalled it separately, since the new install of quicktime on apple.com by default installs it with itunes (sneaky apple)

i found the single install, and voila, works fine now.

btw, IMO iTunes is a worthless steamin' pile of dung.

I use Anapod Explorer for syncing up the iPod
Not sure what you're using it for though.

ive been trying to get anapod explorer to work, but it says that it can't connect to the ipod.

it says make sure it is setup for disk use, but i don't know what to do.

    stupid thing.

itunes is nasty. if you do have one of their players go snag winamp and the pluggin for syncing up and take back your music.

there is a service that runs for iPod that you have to kill, and make sure itunes isn't running in processes
